School Improvement Grantee Progress...

"Without the injection of outside capital, I think we would have not known what to do next.  For people who care and want to be great, there is nothing worse than working hard and not improving.  Often it's not a matter of not wanting to be great, or lacking effort; it's that there are so many levers to pull in the change game...I feel so much more confident in our direction going forward. That's priceless.”

 Matt King
Principal and CEO of EPIC Academy, Cohort 1

Grantees Accelerate Outcomes
New Schools for Chicago has vowed to dramatically impact student achievement. Our goal is simple, but ambitious; to provide 50,000 more students access to high-quality schools by the year 2020.

A critical component to our work is supporting middle performing schools in improving outcomes, opening more high-quality seats for students.

In the fall of 2015 we received 26 grant applicants for Cohort 1. In December, leaders from Erie Elementary*, Epic Academy, and Perspectives Leadership Academy were selected out of a highly-competitive applicant pool.

In January of 2016 we began working with the first cohort of School Improvement Grantees to develop and refine strategic plans. Grantees have moved forward in selecting and participating in professional development opportunities including the 2-week summer Accelerate Institute Program.

“I project that we will end up as a 2+ (we were a 2 last year on SQRP).” –  Sarah Severson, Principal of Perspectives Leadership Academy

New Schools for Chicago looks forward to opening the opportunity to Cohort 2 in October 2016.
