What Parent's Think of GoCPS & More!

Earlier this month, we shared that Kids First Chicago would become the banner for all that we do. As the 2018-2019 school year kicks off, our commitment to strengthening our schools in partnership with communities, families, district and city leadership has never been stronger.

For the past three years, Kids First Chicago (formerly New Schools for Chicago) has worked directly with families and the district to advocate for and implement a single application system at the high-school level.

Working in partnership with the district we hosted a series of parent focus groups throughout the year and compiled their feedback into Parents Talk GoCPS—a report highlighting their positive experience and providing recommendations of how to make the new system even better.

Parents Talk GoCPS is just one example of our continued commitment—as Kids First Chicago—to infusing parent voice in the public education narrative and into all that we do.

The new process—GoCPS—was a resounding success in its debut year: 93% of students participated, and, by all accounts, the new process significantly reduced barriers to accessing a high-quality education across the district and especially in communities with high-minority and low-income students.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS), especially the Office of Access and Enrollment, deserves recognition for their commitment to making the shift and bringing students and parents along throughout the year.

CPS enlisted the UChicago Consortium on School Research and Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to conduct an independent audit of GoCPS’ first year of implementation and performance. The audit confirms that the new system works as intended and helps level the playing field for more students. Alongside the audit, we thought it was critical to gather and share parents’ perspectives with the new system.

Even more, we stand with CPS in their commitment to improving an already remarkable system by learning from year one, and ensuring that communities are deeply engaged as we refine the system together.
