UWA Fencing Club Newsletter, 12 September 2022
Dear UWA Fencing Club members, families, and supporters,
There is a lot going on over the next few weeks, and we need your help to make the best fencing events possible!
This Saturday we are holding a competition for members. This event has several purposes, including to introduce fencers to competition, and to encourage broader skills including refereeing.
- UWA Fencing Club Competition (Saturday 17 September, Claremont)
The competition will run at the following times:
9am – Under 11s (Primary School age groups).
10am – Under 13s (Early high school age group).
11am – Open age groups (everyone else!)
Please come to the competition early to help out with younger age groups, and please be patient as we strive to support all our upcoming fencers!
If you are not competing yourself, please come along to cheer on other members. We are also keen to train referees as well as armourers to support the Club. This would be a great opportunity to start to learn some skills. Parents as well as fencers are encouraged to help if you can find an hour or two to come and help out.
- FencingWA Open Epee and Club Teams Competition (Sunday 18 September, Claremont, from 9am)
We need the support of the community for national competitions coming up. These include the National University Fencing Championships at Murdoch University and the Australian Fencing Competition 3 (AFC#3) open national competition.
- FencingWA Events
These events will be great opportunities see some of the best fencers in Australia, so I encourage all our members to come along – particularly for the epee events - to show your support!
We really need a lot of volunteers for packing equipment at UWA on Friday 23/9/22, and setting up at Murdoch Uni on Saturday Afternoon of 24/09/2022.
We need help packing the van both at the UWA club from 5:30pm and at Murdoch Uni on Wednesday 28/9/2022 after 7:30pm.
We also need help setting up at the Gold Netball Centre on Thursday 29/9/2022 and then finally the venue pack down including unpacking at UWA on Sunday2/10/22.
This is a great opportunity for your younger fencers and families to get involved in running a national competition and to experience a national competition atmosphere.
UniSport Nationals Volunteer Roster
AFC#3 Volunteer Roster
Volunteer Role Descriptions Include:
As a Minimum First aid officers will be required to hold current first aid qualifications (i.e. "Provide First Aid" or "Apply First Aid")
Piste/Scoring Equipment Control
This role is just to swap out Score equipment with spare equipment we will have on hand if something is not working. You will not be expected to fix the equipment and you just need to be able to unplug and plug things in. Training can be given on the day.
Video Referee camera operator
Needs to sit and make sure the camera is pointing at the fencers for the live AFF Stream. The Stream is now Live all day so this would be good to be shared between a few people. A good opportunity for junior fencers to observe video referees. You will be given training on how to make sure you are following the fencers.
Check off Competitors/Officials/ Volunteers/Coaches and give out wristbands for Competition Area Access.
Competition Area Marshalls
Checking people have wristbands that allow them onto the Competition Area.
This role will be to assist where required and you may need to relieve volunteers in other roles so they can take comfort breaks and also marshalling competitors and spectators within the venue. Training will be given at the venue.
I propose to hold our Annual General Meeting on Saturday 19 November from 12:30pm.
- Annual General Meeting
We are always keen to encourage new volunteers willing to help run the Club in any capacity. We welcome a diverse range of committee members to represent a variety of views.
We are always trying to find ways to make our administration easier, including minimising meetings as far as possible, and holding most meetings online.
If you can’t commit to a committee role, please also consider other roles including armourers, referees, member protection officers or helping with our website or social media?! All help is greatly welcomed.
Please submit your nomination to our secretary, Ian (firstname.lastname@example.org) indicating:
Position (e.g. President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer or Committee Member):
