Students Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Richard Gordon
FAU Jupiter students partnered with local agencies to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with several community service activities. They packaged 70 meals for the homeless through the Breaking Bread, Breaking Barriers program and sorted 30 bags of donated clothing for the Homeless Coalition's thrift store. FAU Jupiter’s Campus Life also hosted presentations and a banquet that focused on oppression and social issues.
Honors College Alumna Receives Prestigious Award Richard Gordon
Honors College Alumna Jocelyn Skolnik ’07 has been selected by the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida as the 2017 recipient of the organization’s Emerald Award for Global Citizenship for her work as executive director of El Sol. Emerald Awards honor women who represent the national initiatives of Girl Scouts and serve as role models for today’s girls. An immigrant from Guatemala, Skolnik became a passionate advocate for the Guatemalan community while working to help fund El Sol, Jupiter’s Neighborhood Resource Center.

Since becoming the executive director of El Sol, Skolnik has seen the center expand into a multipurpose clearinghouse for resources to day laborers and their families. In September of 2013, Skolnik was named a “Champion of Change,” a title the White House bestows on individuals who have worked to promote positive change in their communities. The Emerald Award ceremony takes place February 25 in Palm Beach. Learn More.

Students Present Research at the 38th Annual Gopher Tortoise Council Meeting Richard Gordon
Honors College undergraduates Lauren Fremont and David Lucien presented at the 38th Annual Gopher Tortoise Council Meeting at Ravine Gardens State Park in Palatka, FL. Lucien (pictured) presented research on “Ingestion of gastroliths by juvenile and male gopher tortoises at the Abacoa Greenway and Juno Dunes.” His study involved taking radiographs of tortoises to see if they were swallowing fossil shells, bones, and stones as a way to supplement their calcium intake when growing. Fremont gave an oral presentation, co-authored with former HC undergrad Kayla Villanueva, on "Hematology and URTD status of gopher tortoises in the Abacoa Greenway.” She examined the blood chemistry of gopher tortoises and the relationship of that to an infection known as upper respiratory tract disease in gopher tortoises.
Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) meets on FAU’s Jupiter Campus Richard Gordon
The Northern Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) program will be meeting weekly on FAU’s Jupiter Campus from now through March 13. Throughout the class, students develop business ideas, write business plans, conduct market research, pitch their plans to a panel of investors, and actually launch and run their own real, legal, fully formed companies and social movements. The YEA! Investment Panel Presentation will be held on March 14, 6 - 9 p.m. at FAU Jupiter's LLS Auditorium. Attendance is open to the public. Learn More.
Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter presently enrolls more than 1,500 students and offers a broad range of upper-division and graduate courses. The campus houses the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and the nation’s largest Lifelong Learning Society. Both the FAU Brain Institute and the FAU Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology call the MacArthur campus home, providing cutting edge research infrastructure and educational programs that link to other FAU campuses.
