FAU Graduate Student Publishes in Nature Richard Gordon
FAU graduate student Kuo-Sheng Lee published his research titled “Topology of ON and OFF inputs in visual cortex enables an invariant columnar architecture,” in Nature for his work completed at Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI). Kuo-Sheng Lee conducted this work alongside Xiaoying Huang in David Fitzpatrick’s lab at MPFI. Lee is part of the FAU Integrative Biology and Neuroscience graduate program and was recently accepted into the International Max Planck Research School affiliated with FAU. Read More.
FAU Jupiter Celebrates Arbor Day with Town of Jupiter and Honors Former Mayor Richard Gordon
On April 29, FAU Jupiter celebrated being a “2015 Tree Campus USA” for the sixth year in a row, and the Town of Jupiter’s honor of being a “2015 Tree City” for the twentieth year in a row. These honors are bestowed by the Arbor Day Foundation. FAU Jupiter also Honored former Town of Jupiter Mayor Karen Golonka by planting a tree in her honor in the Robert J. Huckshorn Arboretum.
FAU Honors Student Receives NIH Diversity Grant Richard Gordon
FAU's Wilkes Honors College senior Roberto Hernandez was awarded a research supplement from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Hernandez is currently working on campus under the direction of Greg Macleod, Ph.D., associate professor in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, as a research assistant, and the grant will cover his salary and benefits for a full 12 months after he graduates from the Wilkes Honors College. Read More.
Kenan Social Engagement Scholarship Program Awards Three Recipients Randy Dean Blakely, Ph.D
The Kenan Social Engagement Program is held every year and teaches students to execute a business plan toward a social entrepreneurship goal. This year’s recipients of $2,500 for their business proposals are: Hannah DeRuysscher for “Thyme for Tikes,” a partnership with the West Jupiter Community Center that trains young people on how to prepare healthy and nutritional foods; Melanie Oates for “Comida Connection,” a low cost weekly grocery delivery service for food for insecure individuals in the Town of Jupiter; and Eamonn Byrnes for “PBC Fresh,” a YouTube channel that partners with the Nutrition Driven Program of the Food Bank. Florida Atlantic University, established in 1961, officially opened its doors in 1964 as the fifth public university in Florida. Today, the University, with an annual economic impact of $6.3 billion, serves more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students at sites throughout its six-county service region in southeast Florida. FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter opened in the fall of 1999.  The campus presently enrolls more than 1,500 students and offers a broad range of upper-division and graduate courses. The campus is home to the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, the Lifelong Learning Society, and research facilities of Scripps Florida and the Max Planck Florida Institute.
