FAU and Sancilio Team Up on Therapy for Inherited Blindness Richard Gordon
Researchers from FAU are collaborating with scientists from Sancilio and Company, Inc., in Riviera Beach, Fla., to begin a new research project aimed at finding a treatment for patients afflicted by Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). Wen Shen, Ph.D., a neuroscientist, associate professor of biomedical science in FAU’s College of Medicine and a faculty member in FAU’s Brain Institute who has expertise in retinal physiology, will spearhead evaluating the new drug in the animal model. FAU and Jupiter Medical Center Cosponsors BioFlorida’s Life Science Event Richard Gordon
BioFlorida, an advocate organization for Florida’s biopharmaceutical, medical technology and biagriculture industries, hosted an event titled, “Life Sciences: A Collaboration in Motion.” Keynote speakers included; John D. Couris, president and chief executive officer of Jupiter Medical Center, Dan Flynn, Ph.D., vice president of the FAU’s Division of Research, Frederick Sancilio, Ph.D., president of Sancilio & Company, Inc., and Nancy K. Bryan, president and CEO of BioFlorida. The program also featured a first-hand robotic surgery demo of the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System.
New Facility Manager and Project Manager for Jupiter Campus Richard Gordon
FAU Jupiter would like to welcome Vincent Cucchiella to campus. As a Facility Manager and Project Manager at FAU for the Boca Raton and Davie campuses since 1997, Cucchiella will be overseeing the maintenance staff and facilities in Jupiter. He hopes to work to improve the quality of services and physical environment of the Campus. Cucchiella has extensive work experience in both the public and private sectors. He holds an undergraduate degree in Architecture from the University of Maryland and a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from the Johns Hopkins University. Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter presently enrolls more than 1,500 students and offers a broad range of upper-division and graduate courses. The campus houses the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and the nation’s largest Lifelong Learning Society. Both the FAU Brain Institute and the FAU Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology call the MacArthur campus home, providing cutting edge research infrastructure and educational programs that link to other FAU campuses. The Jupiter Life Science Initiative serves to unite scientists and students in campus research and training activities, and helps sustain FAU’s close affiliations with Scripps Florida and the Max Planck Florida Institute, which are also located on the campus.
