Downton Moot Newsletter

March 2017

Welcome to the first of our electronic newsletters. We have recently been busy creating our website and updating all our Friends’ details so we can communicate more efficiently in future. We plan to send regular, but not too regular, emails giving you news about the Moot and events taking place there. Your details will be kept on a computer system for Moot use only. No details will be provided to any other body.

On Site News

We have spent much of the last year trying to get funds to improve the paths and the archives. Sadly, we were rejected by the Heritage Lottery Fund for a major scheme. We have therefore cut this into “bite size” chunks and plan to do this in parts as funds permit. We received £8,000 from Tesco as part of their plastic bags scheme so we will be starting on bite 1 soon. Other grant applications are being prepared so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

The new borders are coming on well and we look forward to seeing their appearance this summer. This was a major project for the last three years which has now been completed. As I write, the snowdrops are out and there is a good covering but they are fading. If you are quick you may still see some.

Easter Egg Hunt

Monday 17th April 10.45

A programme of events for this year is in course of planning and we will write to you again when finalised and before each event. The next event is the popular Easter Egg hunt for children of 11 years and under, entrance fee £2.50 per child. This is on Easter Monday, 17 April, starting at 11 prompt. Gates open at 10.45. Refreshments are available too. It is a great social occasion. 3500 eggs will be scattered on the sunken lawn so there are eggs for all. Don’t be late!! There is also a plant stall as well.

More Information

D Day Landings & Pegasus Bridge

5th May 7.15 in the Memorial Hall

This year the armchair travel evening has a different format. We are very lucky to have been able to get Malcolm Dean to show this film of the extraordinary events of D Day and Pegasus Bridge. It lasts about an hour and is very moving. It is narrated by participants, both French and English.

Tickets, available from the Borough Café, are £10 to include snacks and nibbles and there will be a cash bar. Doors open at 7.15 and the film starts at 8.00

Family Dog Show

17th September

There will also be the fun family dog show on Sunday September 17th. This was a great success last year and enjoyed by dogs, owners and spectators alike. More details will be available later but do pop the date in your diary.

The Website

The website is up and running well so do visit us at and take a look.  Why not mark it as a favourite? Information will be posted here regularly.

Our chairman has written an article for the League of Friends of Salisbury Hospital magazine 2017 which you may find interesting below.

We hope to see you at the Moot or at one of our events. Thank you for your support. With best wishes from all of us.
