November 2016 Brewsletter
Welcome to November, also known as Movember to supporters of the Movember Foundation, including Blue Point Brewing Co. (more on that below).  We had a terrific Oktoberfest season on Long Island, with dozens of festivals, beer dinners and other special events to celebrate fall and our favorite beverage. participated in several festivals and enjoyed meeting beer enthusiasts from across Long Island.  Many of you are getting this Brewsletter for the first time because you signed up at one of the festivals, and we welcome you and hope you enjoy reading about the Long Island beer scene.

Homebrew Clubs Grow on Long Island
LIBeerGuide and Homebrews & Handgrenades at Crossroads Farm Oktoberfest
Homebrewing has been popular on Long Island for decades and the oldest homebrew club on the Island, B.E.E.R. (Brewers East End Revival), celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.  B.E.E.R. holds monthly meetings on the third Monday of the month alternating between Black Forest Brew Haus in Farmingdale and BrickHouse Brewery in Patchogue.  The club holds its annual homebrew competition in May and this year's 20th anniversary competition, held at Great South Bay Brewery, had 168 entries in 18 categories.

Another homebrew club primarily based in Suffolk County, LIBME (Long Island Beer & Malt Enthusiasts), will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2017.  The club holds its monthly meetings on the first or second Wednesday of the month. LIBME will hold its 4th annual Homebrew & Mead Competition on Nov. 19 at Great South Bay Brewery.  The club also hosts many other events throughout the year, including pub crawls and other social events.

The newest homebrew club on Long Island is Brewgrenades (Handgrenades Homebrew Club), based in Nassau County.  The club started up in 2014, one year after Peter Tripp founded his Homebrews & Handgrenades supply shop in Baldwin.  Brewgrenades holds monthly meetings on the third Thursday of the month at various craft beer bars and breweries, including Black Sheep Ale House and Effin Gruven, and also holds a monthly bottle swap at the store in Baldwin.

All three homebrew clubs have become a regular presence at Long Island beer festivals, where they are mobbed as they pour tastes of their homebrews.  The quality of the beers is top notch and several members of these clubs have graduated to become professional brewers, including Charlie Becker of 1940s Brewing Co.  So if you're interested in learning to homebrew or just want to meet fellow beer enthusiasts, check out's Homebrew page for more info.

Blue Point Brewing sponsors Movember team
