Looking Ahead to 2020

New York State has now passed Colorado and the state of Washington to have the second highest number of craft breweries in the U.S., trailing only California.  New York has over 450 licensed breweries and Suffolk County has the most of any county in the state, with over 40 craft breweries.  Long Island's craft beer industry continues to expand and we have many great things to look forward to in the New Year, including:

New brewery tap rooms - Ghost Brewing Co. opened its tap room in Bay Shore on Dec.13, becoming the 9th new brewery tap room to open in 2019 and bringing the total number of brewery tap rooms and brewpubs on Long Island to 46.  Click here to read our recent article about Ghost Brewing and brewmaster Paul Komsic in the Long Island Press.

Several more brewery tap rooms are expected to open early in 2020, including Bright Eye Beer Co. in Long Beach and HopWin’s Brewery in Bay Shore.  Other breweries planning to open tap rooms later in 2020 include Motion Craft Brewed in Massapequa Park, Moriches Field Brewing in Center Moriches, Long Beach Brewing and Flying Belgian Brewery in Oceanside, Twin Fork Brewing in Riverhead and Sunrise Ales & Lagers (formerly Bellport Brewing) in Bohemia.
Craft brewery expansions - in 2019, several breweries expanded production and opened new tap rooms, most notably Blue Point Brewing which opened the Blue Point Brewpub in April inside its new building in Patchogue.  In 2020, we can look forward to several breweries expanding and opening new tap rooms, including Saint James Brewery and Sand City Brewing Co.

Saint James Brewery was founded in 2010 by brewer Jamie Adams and his wife Rachel and is known for its wide range of Belgian-style ales made with locally sourced ingredients.  The brewery moved production to an industrial park in Holbrook in 2015, and is now close to opening its first tap room in the village of St. James (which is sure to cause more confusion about the spelling of the brewery's name!).

Sand City Brewing opened in Northport in 2015 and quickly became known for its deliciously hoppy IPAs and inventive collaboration beers made with breweries from across Long Island and around the country.  The brewery is renovating an old CVS building on Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst, which will include a larger brewhouse along with a tap room and beer garden that are slated to open in the spring.

Craft Beer Marketing Awards - The Crushies

Another event to look forward to in 2020 will be the 1st Annual Craft Beer Marketing Awards, which will be announced at a live event on April 20 during the Craft Brewers Conference in San Antonio.  The awards are the brainchild of Jackie DiBella and Jim McCune of EGC Group, one of Long Island's leading advertising and marketing firms.  McCune heads up EGC's Craft Beverage Division, which does branding and marketing work for breweries across the country.

The awards are dubbed the "Crushies" (which LIBeerGuide helped name) and will recognize the very best of beer marketing and the teams and individuals behind them.  Awards will be given in over 30 categories including best craft beer labels, best tap handles, best retro design, best merchandise, best taproom and best use of social media.

The Crushie award trophies depict a tattooed arm crushing a beer can to symbolically represent how breweries are “Crushing It” with their creative beer marketing and branding. The Crushie trophies were designed and manufactured by the firm that creates the prestigious Emmy Award and MTV’s Moonman statue.

The entry deadline for the Crushie awards is January 31 and judging will be completed in March by a panel of beer industry veterans and experts from the creative world of marketing and branding. is pleased to be on the judges panel and we look forward to being a part of this exciting new event for the craft beer industry.
