March 2021
Spring is in the air!  In addition to the usual lifting of spirits that comes from warmer weather and flowers blooming, this year we are lifted by the hope that we are beating the virus through vaccines and continued vigilance. In this season of Passover and Easter, we pray that the end to shutdowns that began one year ago is within reach.  Our prayers go out to all those affected by the virus, especially those who have lost loved ones and those suffering from illness.  #StaySafeLongIsland

Brewery Bike Tours to Start in Riverhead on April 3

A sure sign of spring on the East End is the start of group bike and brew tours by Brew Crew Cycles in Riverhead.  The start of the 2021 season is this Saturday, April 3, and reservations are available only for groups of 8 to 14 people due to Covid restrictions.  The bike tours typically run about 2 1/2 hours and visit three to four breweries and/or restaurants.

Brew Crew Cycles will have a new stop on its tours this year, Tradewinds Brewing, which opened last June on West Main Street.  Other breweries on the tour may include Long Ireland Beer Co. and North Fork Brewing, with other possible stops including The Birchwood of Polish Town, a landmark restaurant with local beers on tap.

This weekend is also opening weekend in Riverhead for the new taproom of übergeek Brewing Company, which took over the former brewery and taproom of Moustache Brewing last month.  Doors will open on Friday, April 2 at 2 PM and advance reservations are recommended. Riverhead's thriving craft brewery scene also includes the newly opened Peconic County Brewing and Twin Fork Beer Co., which opened its new taproom and brewery on Raynor Avenue last fall.

Sand City Brewing Opens Second Location in Lindenhurst

After three years of searching, planning and construction, Sand City South opened its second location on March 5 in Lindenhurst.  The new taproom and brewery on South Wellwood Avenue was constructed in a 10,000 square ft. former CVS Phamacy that had been vacant for years.  Sand City, which opened its first brewery and taproom on Main Street in Northport in 2015, becomes the third brewery to open in Lindenhurst after W.A. Meadwerks in 2018 and 27A Brewing in 2019.  These openings brought an end to a 70-year dry spell in Lindenhurst, which until 1949 was home to Long Island's largest brewery, Linden Brewery.
Sand City's co-founders, Bill Kiernan and Kevin Sihler, were attracted by the large space and by the willingness of Lindenhurst village officials to work with them in renovating the property.  The Babylon Industrial Development Agency also provided tax incentives to help Sand City bring jobs to the community and revitalize the village's downtown area.

The renovations included ripping up all the floors and creating a sunken brewhouse, which the taproom overlooks.  The brewhouse has a 20 barrel brewing system, double the size of Sand City's Northport location, which will enable the brewery to increase canning and distribution of their current beers and to experiment with new styles including barrel-aged beers.
B.E.E.R. Homebrew Competition Returns in May

Long Island's oldest homebrew club, Brewers East End Revival (B.E.E.R.) will hold its 24th Annual Brew-Off Homebrew Competition Take Two in May, after being forced to cancel the competition in 2020.  Entries will be accepted in all BJCP 2015 style categories, and as usual the Pete Algerio Memorial Award will go to the club member who brews the best stout, who will then have their name and beer memorialized on the plaque at Karp’s Hardware and Homebrew.
The deadline for entries is April 30 and entries need to be dropped off at one of three locations:  Karp's in East Northport, Bellport Cold Beer and Soda, or South Shore Craft Brewery in Oceanside.  Good luck to all homebrewers!
