Labor Day weekend is here and that means Oktoberfest season is just around the corner!  The 185th Munich Oktoberfest will kick off on Sept. 22 but here on Long Island the fun will start on Sept. 16 with the annual Ompahfest at Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square.  Many more Oktoberfest events will be held across LI, including an Oktoberfest weekend on Sept. 29-30 at The Mansion at Glen Cove.  The best place to locate an event near you is at our comprehensive listing of LI Oktoberfest Celebrations.  Ein prosit!

Lindenhurst To Gain Brewery After 70 Years

The village of Lindenhurst, which has a proud brewing tradition dating back to its founding by German immigrants in the 1800s, will again be home to a brewery nearly 70 years after the last one closed.  Originally known as Breslau, the name Lindenhurst was adopted in the 1890s and prior to that John Feller founded a brewery in 1870 that was in operation under various owners until it closed during Prohibition. Soon after Prohibition's repeal, the new Linden Brewery opened in 1934 on Montauk Highway and at its peak produced 60,000 barrels per year, including popular German style pilsners, culmbacher (dark lager) and bock.  Linden Brewery closed in 1949 after facing competition from larger breweries in Brooklyn with their own bottling facilities.

This fall a new craft brewery, 27A Brewing Company, is planning to open on North Wellwood Avenue just a few blocks from the site of Feller's brewery on East John Street, which is now St. John's Lutheran Church.  27A's owners, Ryan Cooke and Melissa Bates, who are also engaged to be married, grew up in Lindenhurst.  Cooke started out as a homebrewer and then worked at Greenpoint Brewing and for Iron Heart Canning Company.  27A has been brewing beer at the brewery and recently served its "Non Stop Feeling" Double Dry Hopped New England IPA at the Long Island Craft Classic beerfest. The tasting room is under construction and Lindenhurst residents are ready to welcome the new brewery and its hometown owners this fall.

Long Ireland Beer Co. Wins BREW'D Competition

The second annual Long Island BREWE'D competition was held at the Long Island Craft Class beerfest on August 11 at Heckscher State Park.  This year the special ingredient for participating breweries to use was pineapple, and 11 of Long Island's craft breweries entered beers ranging in style from Pale Ales to Sours.

The record number of attendees at the fest had the chance to taste the competing beers and vote for their favorite.  This year's winner was Moka Loa Pineapple IPA from Long Ireland Beer Company in Riverhead.  According to co-owner Greg Martin, the brewery used a base beer of its Mosaic IPA and infused it with a pineapple extract, finding "the right balance of pineapple flavor to really allow it to shine."  For more good karma, the name "Moku Loa" means Long Island in Hawaiian.
