August 2017
Happy Labor Day Weekend!  We hope all of you had a great summer and welcome to our new subscribers.

The devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey to Houston and other areas in Texas and Louisiana brought back vivid memories of Superstorm Sandy five years ago.  Our hearts go out to those people impacted by Harvey and we are encouraged by the support and assistance that is pouring into the Gulf Coast from all over the country, including folks on Long Island who are paying it forward.

Stan Hieronymus Talks Beer and Hops Around Long Island

Long Island’s homebrew clubs were pleased to host noted beer expert and author Stan Hieronymus at several events across the island on August 19 and 20.  Long Island Beer & Malt Enthusiasts (LIBME) organized a hops seminar at Barrier Brewing Co. in Oceanside and a beer brunch at The Fifth Season in Port Jefferson.

Peter Tripp, owner of Homebrews & Handgrenades homebrew shop in Baldwin, hosted a book signing that was attended by many Long Island homebrewers including members of LIBME and the Handgrenades Homebrew Club.  Among the books that Stan has written are For the Love of Hops, Brewing With Wheat and Brew Like a Monk.

Oktoberfest Kicks Off on Long Island

The month of September brings the start of Oktoberfest season, with the traditional start of the Munich Oktoberfest coming on the third Saturday of the month, which this year is Sept. 16.  Oktoberfest celebrations will be held all across Long Island and the best place to find a fest happening near you is on the LI Oktoberfest Celebrations page on LIBeerGuide.com.

One of the biggest Oktoberfest parties on Long Island is the annual Ompahfest at Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square, LI's premier German restaurant and biergarten.  Ompahfest is always held the day after the Steuben Parade in Manhattan, this year on Sept. 17, and features music from bands that march in the parade, including six bands this year direct from Germany and Austria.  There will be plenty of authentic Oktoberfestbier flowing along with hearty wursts and other German food.

Long Island BREW'D Winner

The Long Island Craft Classic festival on August 12 had record attendance in its second year being held at Heckscher State Park.  This year the fest sponsored the first Long Island BREW’D competition, in which participating local breweries all agreed to use a mystery ingredient, which they only found out about six weeks before the festival.  The ingredient this year was peach and nine Long Island breweries competed in a taste-off judged by festival attendees.

The winner was a collaboration beer brewed by Pat Alfred, head brewer at Greenport Harbor Brewing Company and Chris Candiano, co-founder and brewer at Bay Shore’s Destination Unknown Beer Company.  The two long-time friends developed a recipe for Fuzzy Flamingo, a sweet Berliner Weisse-style ale brewed with fresh raspberry, milk sugar and of course peach, that was not overpowering at just 4.8% abv.
New Places to Enjoy Great Beer

Just in time for Oktoberfest, a new German-style beer hall recently opened in Babylon.  The Local was founded by the owners of one of Babylon's top beer bars, The Villager.  Located directly across from the LIRR station, The Local has 14 taps that feature mostly German beers, including Franziskaner and Krombacher.

Jamesport Farm Brewery held a grand opening party for its tasting room on Aug. 26 and is now open from Wed. to Sun., with special hours on Labor Day from 12-8 pm.
