August 2016 Brewsletter
Summer is going way too fast!!  Hopefully August won't fly by the way that July did and we'll be able to relax and enjoy some great Long Island beers at the beach or a BBQ.  July was filled with great craft beer events including Greenport Harbor Brewing's 7th Anniversary Party on July 16 and Long Ireland Brewery's 2nd Annual Pintwood Derby on July 23.  Much more fun is on tap for August so read on!

Long Island Craft Classic takes baton from North Fork Craft Beer Festival
On August 6, the Saturday of the opening weekend of the Olympic Games in Rio, the gold medal winner for beerfests on Long Island will be held with a new name at a new location.  The Long Island Craft Classic at Heckscher State Park is the successor to the North Fork Craft Beer Festival, which was held for the last nine years under a tent at vineyards on the North Fork and last year at Calverton Golf Links.  Andy and Lynda Calimano of Starfish Junction Productions have moved the festival a little further west, which should make Nassau County beer lovers happy!  The fest will feature lots of Long Island craft breweries and also homebrews from Long Island's three great homebrewing clubs -- Handgrenades Homebrew and Craft Beer Club (, Long Island Beer and Malt Enthusiasts ( and Brewers East End Revival (  There will also be delicious bbq from BOBBIQUE in Patchogue and live music from New York band Chantilly Whiskey.  More info and tickets are available at
Long Island now has 43 craft breweries, including 23 tasting rooms

Lithology Brewing Co. held the grand opening of its new tasting room on Main Street in Farmingdale on July 14, in the space that it purchased from the pioneering craft brewery incubator A Taste of Long Island.  Lithology is continuing to act as an incubator and currently has two start-up craft breweries in residence, Flying Belgian and Tweaking Frog.  With this opening, Long Island now has 23 craft brewery tasting rooms, which includes four brewpubs and 19 brewery tasting rooms (including two locations for Greenport Harbor Brewing -- the original in Greenport and second in Peconic).  This is remarkable growth when you consider that less than 10 years ago, in 2007, there was just one craft brewery on Long Island (Blue Point Brewing) and four brewpubs (BrickHouse, Southampton Publick House, Black Forest and the once great but now closed John Harvard's).  The craft brewery market on Long Island is poised for more rapid growth as several breweries are planning to open tasting rooms later this year, including:

- 1940's Brewing Company, Holbrook
- BrewSA, Freeport
- The Brewers Collective, Bay Shore
- Garvies Point Brewing, Glen Cove
- Jamesport Farm Brewery, Jamesport
- Long Beard Brewing, Riverhead
- Squarehead Brewing, Holbrook currently lists 39 craft breweries on Long Island and 4 brewpubs, including Amity Ales in Amityville that hosts Bunker Ales.  There is plenty of room for more growth, since Long Island's population can support many more craft breweries.  Bernie Kilkelly of was interviewed by News12 Long Island in May and said "we're not even close to saturation."  So enjoy this tremendous stage of growth for the craft brewing scene on Long Island.  The News12 segment can be viewed at
