July 2016 Brewsletter
LIBeerGuide hopes that your summer is off to a good start and we wish you a Happy Fourth of July!  We hope you’ll be toasting the birthday of our great nation with some tasty and refreshing Long Island craft beer.  Following is a recap of some beer news from across Long Island and a preview of events coming up in July and later in the summer.
Successful Long Island Craft Beer Week 2016
Long Island Craft Beer Week 2016 (actually 10 days of events from May 13-22) was a huge success, thanks to the great organizing done by Jaclynn Brandi and Dave Schultzer.  The week kicked off with the 3rd annual BayFest at Great South Bay Brewery in Bay Shore and featured dozens of tastings, beer dinners and other fun events across Long Island.  The 2016 Craft Cares collaboration beer was a Vermont-style IPA that got a big thumbs up from everyone who tasted it, and the donation program collected an enormous amount of canned food for Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank.   The 2016 Craft Cares collaborators were:
- Charles Becker, 1940’s Brewing
- Steve Pominski, Barrage Brewing
- Jim Richards, Blue Point Brewing
- Paul Komsic, BrickHouse Brewery
- Chris Candiano, Destination Unknown Beer Company
- Marc Jackson, Lithology Brewing
- Lauri and Matt Spitz, Moustache Brewing
- Mike Philbrick, Port Jeff Brewing
- Kevin Sihler, Sand City Brewing
- Larry Goldstein, Spider Bite Brewing
- Peter Chekijian, Twin Fork Beer
The beer was brewed at Blue Point Brewing in Patchogue on April 7 and LIBeerGuide was fortunate to be there and see firsthand the great camaraderie and creativity of Long Island’s craft brewers.  News12 Long Island was also there and the segment they aired can be viewed at
“Tapping the Island” Segment on News12 Features

News12 Long Island also aired a segment on May 18 about the booming craft beer scene on Long Island.  Rich Barrabi of News12 visited Destination Unknown Beer Company in Bay Shore and Hoptron Brewtique in Patchogue, where he spoke with the mayor of Patchogue about the economic benefit the town has seen from craft beer.  Rich also interviewed Bernie Kilkelly of at BrickHouse Brewery in Patchogue and gave a nice plug to our website.  The segment can be viewed at
Long Island’s Pioneering Brewpubs Celebrate 20 Year Anniversaries
Congratulations to BrickHouse Brewery on its 20th Anniversary, which the brewpub celebrated with a weekend of events on June 3-6.  In honor of the anniversary, brewmaster Paul Komsic and assistant Brian Smith brewed an Anniversary Ale that was featured at a special Mug Club party on the official birthday celebration on June 6.
Southampton Publick House will reach its 20th Anniversary in November and will celebrate from its new home at 62 Jobs Lane in the heart of Southampton.  The brewpub relocated in May from its historic location at 40 Bowden Square to take over the prime downtown location of the Driver’s Seat restaurant, which had been at the spot for 55 years.
New Craft Breweries Continue to Spring Up Across Long Island
Several craft breweries are making progress with permits and licensing and are getting ready to begin production and open tasting rooms.  Congrats to Long Beard Brewing in Riverhead, which got a long-awaited building permit and has begun construction of a brewery and tasting room at the former firehouse on Second Street.  1940s Brewing Company is days away from opening its new tasting room on Lincoln Avenue in Holbrook and SquareHead Brewing hopes to join them on High Street in Holbrook later this summer.  In Nassau County, Garvies Point Brewery hopes to open its tasting room in Glen Cove later this summer.
