High Dreams July 2016, Authenticity
Global surveys indicate the lowest percentages of all times for confidence in business leaders (18%) and employee engagement (13%). This fact places the importance of being authentic in development of leadership to higher ranks.
Total of the stories relating to our experiences, what we live at present and who we want to be in the future comprises, to the fullest extent, our personality. In these stories reside our beliefs concerning our competencies and limitations. Authentic leaders develop a continuous self-awareness regarding the transformation, in time, of the total of these stories that constitute the personality.
Returning to yourself and being disposed to frankly confront your strengths as well as the aspects that are open to development or the aspects you do not like much, serve to being authentic. One of the ways to accomplish this is to review your belief system; that is being aware of the beliefs, assumptions, and thoughts that constitute your stories.
Leadership guru Kevin Cashman distinguishes beliefs in two sets as conscious and shadow beliefs. The beliefs at conscious level are the ones on the surface that you access every day. For example, your beliefs about how creative, productive or slow you are. Shadow beliefs are hidden and may be more difficult to explore. In a situation you avoid to confront, you, mostly, take refuge unconsciously in these shadow beliefs.
  • The feedbacks you receive are frequently inconsistent with how you see yourself
  • A strength has begun to give you damage
  • You close yourself to new knowledge or different perspectives
  • You give exaggerated emotional reaction
  • You approach the others’ development areas in a highly challenging and criticizing way
  • You frequently feel painful discomfort in your body
your shadow beliefs might have taken charge. It is very hard for you to become the captain of your ship unless you transform your shadow beliefs to conscious beliefs.
Which of your shadow beliefs may be getting you off course recently?
Be authentic with love,

The Danger of a Single Story | Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie | TED Talks
“…when we reject the single story, when we realize that there is never a single story about any place, we regain a kind of paradise.”

Get inspired from novelist and story teller Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's talk featured in TED whereby she tells about the danger of a single story.
