High Dreams September 2016, Flexibility
Leaders need more flexibility to learn, to reset what they have learned and learn again. This requires employing a continuous learning cycle. The cycle beings functioning when you reflect on what’s going on and put forth your options about how to be a better leader in the forthcoming situations. Just at this point, requesting feedback enables you to entertain different perspectives even if you do not host new points of view. Insights you can gain from feedback provide you more flexibility for new choices.
If not asking for feedback but confronting the feedback compels you, you may be stuck with what is wrong in the feedback you receive and thus employ a defensive or an offensive attitude.
In his book “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There”  leadership guru and professional coach Marshall Goldsmith suggests that you make the following four requests from people you want to receive sincere and useful feedback:
  1. Break with the past.
  2. Always tell the truth.
  3. Be supportive and helpful. Not sarcastic and negative.
  4. Find something you can develop in yourself. Thus both parties focus on “developing” rather than “judging ”.
And finally Goldsmith suggests that after you receive feedback, you refrain from asserting your opinion and just thank.
