President's Message

Autumn is traditionally a season of transition that embodies a culmination - a time to gather the fruits of labour and take stock of the bounty we have been afforded. I can’t think of a better time to launch the new version of our newsletter highlighting the work of our CAREB-ACCER committees.

This month we will be launching the Virtual REB, a new CAREB-ACCER professional development initiative that will facilitate discussion on a series of case studies. This collaborative project will result in resources which can be used by members, within their own institutions, to support the orientation and training of REB members and professionals. We are also building a national REB directory, refining content for a CAREB-ACCER webinar training series and of course, planning for the CAREB-ACCER 2017 conference in Halifax.

As a member-driven organization, member engagement is the cornerstone of CAREB-ACCER’s success. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the CAREB-ACCER members who generously volunteer their time and efforts to our various initiatives. It is through the dedication and expertise of our members that we can offer the services that we do and we encourage members to become involved by participating at the committee level in one of our three service branches:
  • The Membership and Communications Committee (MCC) is responsible for communications and outreach activities with the CAREB-ACCER membership.
  • The Professional Development Committee (PDC) is responsible for supporting CAREB-ACCER members through professional development activities and programs.
  • The Conference Planning Committee (CPC) is responsible for the planning and execution of the CAREB-ACCER National Conference and Annual General Meeting.
For further information about CAREB-ACCER committees and how to get involved, please visit our website.

On behalf of the CAREB-ACCER Board of Directors, I wish you all a bountiful fall season and hope that you get to revel in some late season sun before the snow flies.

Lori Walker
President, CAREB-ACCER

A look back at the 2016 National CAREB-ACCER Conference

Thank you to all the delegates and speakers at the 2016 CAREB-ACCER National Conference in Toronto for making the conference a great success! This year we gathered 286 delegates, with a necessary cap to adhere to the maximum capacity for meeting room space. As in previous years, the 2016 conference was preceded by a day of professional development workshops for REB members and administrators with 114 delegates participating in these workshops. CAREB-ACCER was also pleased to partner with the Canadian Bioethics Society for a special joint conference opening reception featuring a talk by André Picard, Public Health Reporter with the Globe & Mail.
The Conference Planning Committee worked hard as always to make attending the conference a great experience. A highlight of this year's event was the Network Café consisting of informal, topic-based, group sessions that brought delegates together to network and discuss common issues. The Conference Planning Committee is looking into ways to make these sessions even better in 2017, including putting in place recommendations to have more structured sessions. We also continue to work towards making the conference website more intuitive and user-friendly.
CAREB-ACCER is looking forward to the 2017 National Conference and AGM taking place at the Halifax Marriott in Nova Scotia, on April 28-29. Pre-conference workshops will be held on April 27. More information to come soon. If you have suggestions or would like to help out at the conference please email us at
