Welcome to my September newsletter

Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to my September 2017 residents' newsletter, my latest monthly update designed to give an overview about what I've been doing locally across the Havant constituency, and in Westminster. Please feel free to forward this on to your friends, family and neighbours who may be interested: they can sign-up to receive it themselves by clicking this link!

I hope that you enjoyed the summer break. It has been a pleasure meeting many of you at some of the great events that have taken place across the constituency over the last few months, including the Hayling Island Three Churches Fete which I opened for the third consecutive year.

This year also saw another successful round of exam results for our local schools with students achieving strong results in both GCSE and A-level exams. Congratulations to everyone for the hard work and effort that has helped contribute towards this success.

I know many of you are now looking forward to the many excellent events which will be taking place during the Emsworth British Food Fortnight from Saturday 23 September. Once again Alistair Gibson and the team from the Emsworth Business Association have put on a fabulous and diverse schedule. I am sure it will be fantastically well supported throughout the whole two weeks.

Nominations are still open for my Small Business Awards. So, whether it is your favourite pub, charity, restaurant, hairdressers, shop or tradesperson visit alanmak.org.uk/nominate for more information.

Don't forget to save the date for my second Older Persons Information Fair on Friday 13 October at Hayling Community Centre from 10am to 2pm.

Thank you to residents for your ongoing support, and I will continue working hard for you locally and in Westminster.

Please contact me to invite me to a community event, or to give me feedback on this newsletter!

Best wishes,

Alan Mak MP

MP's Havant business fund delivers £500k investment and secures local jobs

A business fund I launched last year, in partnership with the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), has resulted in almost half a million pounds of investment into the local economy. In total, the investment is forecast to secure 24 jobs at the three local firms awarded funding so far.

The money has been used to purchase equipment such as machinery, with the funding resulting in an additional investment of over £360,000 into supported projects.

One of the businesses that has benefited from the funding is New Lane-based manufacturer Straightpoint (pictured). A world leading exporter of industrial weighing equipment, Straightpoint has used the money to expand its site and purchase machinery which allows it to manufacture its products from start to finish in Havant.

I am delighted that this investment into our local firms has resulted in more jobs and growth, representing real tangible results from my Havant Business Support Fund, and delivering on my promise to make Havant's strong economy one of my top priorities as your local MP.

There is still money available from the fund and I urge all Havant businesses that could benefit from capital investment to apply.

Discussing policy with young leader

Listening to the views of young people is important, so in mid-August I met Oaklands Catholic School student Anastasia Lonergan, the newly elected Member of the Youth Parliament for Havant, Fareham and Gosport, to discuss policy.

Anastasia, 15, who is going into Year 11 at the school, recently won the vote of her fellow youngsters to represent the three areas and we sat down for a cup of tea during the school holidays in August to chat about the issues that matter to young people in the area.

Members of Youth Parliament are elected annually in every part of the UK. Once elected MYPs organise events, run campaigns, make speeches, hold debates and ensure the views of young people are listened to by decision makers.

I think it’s amazing we have great people like Anastasia in our community who are putting themselves forward and making sure the voices of young people are heard.

Delighted Havant Academy's progress recognised by national award

Attending a good school changed the direction of my life, and I know first-hand the difference that a high quality education can make. That is why supporting local schools across the Havant constituency has been one of my top priorities as your local MP.

Last year I invited the Schools Minister Nick Gibb to Havant Academy, so he could see first-hand how a dedicated group of teachers and parents could come to together to transform a failing school.

As a result of the visit I organised, the Minister recommended Havant Academy for the Education Business Outstanding Progress in a Secondary School Award. I was delighted to find out recently that Havant Academy had beaten six other finalists to win the prize.

Havant Academy is thought to be the most improved state school in the country, going from facing closure in 2010 due to poor performance to now heading towards being recognised by Ofsted as Outstanding. Just in the last two years since I was first elected, I have seen the difference Havant Academy makes to its pupils and the wider community.

Congratulations to Principal Helen Cassady, all the governors, staff, parents and pupils on their fantastic achievement.

Nominated for MP of the Year award

I am honoured to have been nominated for a  prestigious national award that recognises work done by MPs in engaging with under-represented and underprivileged sections of the community.

The Patchwork Foundation's MP of the Year award recognises the work of politicians in their communities around the UK. Winners in recent years include Justine Greening, Caroline Lucas, Sadiq Khan, and the late Jo Cox.

The Patchwork Foundation cited my sucessful community events, including commitment to boosting the number students from Havant attending top universities, as one of the reasons for the nomination. Havant has one of the lowest levels of youngsters in higher education and to combat the problem I organised the first ever Havant Oxbridge Conference in Leigh Park last year. In total 70 pupils from Crookhorn College, Park Community School, Warblington School, Hayling College and Purbook Park School were at the event to receive a masterclass from outreach officers of Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Since first being elected in 2015, I have organised two Jobs & Apprenticeships Fairs, a Small Business Awards, and an Older Persons Information Fair. Thousands of local residents have attended or been involved.

I am thrilled to have been nominated for the Patchwork Foundation MP of the Year award. As an active local MP I am determined to make a tangible difference in the community, and make our area a better place to live, work and grow up. I’m grateful to the many residents and community groups who continue to support my work locally.

Challenging new train operator
to deliver on promises

After lobbying for better trains since first being elected in 2015, I have challenged the new operators of the Havant to London line - South Western Railway - to deliver on their promises of faster, better trains as they take over the franchise.

In their successful bid, First Group and MTR promised refurbished trains, faster wi-fi on trains, 35 additional weekly services between Havant and London Waterloo and increased Sunday services.

I met First Group during the bidding stage to lobby them on behalf of Havant’s residents and commuters – and recently met Andy Mellors, the new Managing Director of the South Western franchise in Westminster following the announcement they had won.

It is vital that promises made during the bidding process are kept, and I expect improvements to be made to services.

While both First Group and MTR have strong track records of delivering successful railway franchises, I know that residents and travellers will want to see action straight away. That is why South Western need to implement improvements such as better compensation for delays and flexible season tickets as soon as operationally possible.

HAVANT OLDER PERSONS FAIR 2017

My Havant Older Persons Information Fair will return to the Hayling Island Community Centre on Friday 13 October for the second consecutive year.

Last year we had more than 1,000 people come to the event, which attracted a wide range of different exhibitors including businesses, government agencies, community groups and charities that work with or serve older people.

The event is open to everyone, including the friends, family, neighbours and carers of older people. I encourage everyone to come along to find out more about what is on offer in the community for elderly residents. Admission and parking are free.

If you are interested in exhibiting at the event, then please email alan.mak.mp@parliament.uk and my team will get in touch with more information.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION

British Food Fortnight returns for 2017

Emsworth will once again be participating in British Food Fortnight, which this year runs from 23 September to 8 October, with Alan encouraging all residents to attend one of the Fortnight's events.

Part of Love British Food, British Food Fortnight is an opportunity for Emsworth to showcase its food heritage but more than that it’s about the community coming together to celebrate itself through food.

The diverse programme of events and activities over the fortnight include everything from an Apple Pressing Day, to a Community Seafood Lunch on the Quay and a Beer and Cider Festival. Emsworth businesses will be pushing the boat out this year too with tastings, demonstrations and special offers. Once again Emsworth is working with local Primary Schools, Colleges of Further Education and supporting the local Beacon Food Bank.
