Welcome to my February newsletter

Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to my February 2018 residents' newsletter, my latest monthly update designed to give an overview about what I've been doing locally across the Havant constituency, and in Westminster. Please feel free to forward this on to your friends, family and neighbours who may be interested: they can sign-up to receive it themselves by clicking this link!

Preparations are now well underway for my next major community event, the Havant Jobs, Apprenticeships and Careers Fair 2018, taking place on Friday 9 March. This is the third year in a row that I've organised this event, which takes place at Havant Leisure Centre, and I am sure that it will be as well supported as in previous years.

Admission is free, with hundreds of jobs and apprenticeships on offer from both the public and private sector. The National Careers Service will also be holding workshops on both CV writing and job interview techniques.

So, whether you’re looking for a new role, or a career change, I encourage everyone to come along to find out more. If you're an employer - either a business, charity or public body - and would like to exhibit, please email me at alan.mak.mp@parliament.uk.

In Westminster, I have been promoted to a new role as senior Parliamentary aide to Secretary of State Greg Clark in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Working hard for the Havant constituency remains my top priority, but I am obviously delighted to have this additional role too.

Thank you to residents for your ongoing support, and I will continue working hard for you locally and in Westminster.

Please contact me to invite me to a community event, or to give me feedback on this newsletter!

Best wishes,

Alan Mak MP

Treasury Minister praises tourism on
Hayling Island following visit

Senior Treasury Minister Mel Stride praised the role of tourism in boosting both the local and national economy following a visit to Langstone Hotel on Hayling Island.

I invited the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, who grew up in the area and is a former pupil at Portsmouth Grammar School, to a meeting with local business leaders and a tour of the popular hotel.

He also heard about plans for further economic growth in the area, including projects such as Dunsbury Hill Farm and Solent Retail Park which are already creating work for local people.

As well as updating the Minister on the local economic climate, members of the business community also had the chance to discuss a range of issues, including the Government’s plans for Brexit.

The Minister also explained how the Autumn Budget is helping get the economy fit for the future.

Hayling Island has long history as a tourist destination, so it was great to show him around the Langstone Hotel and for him to see how the tourism sector is contributing to our strong local economy.

Jobs, Apprenticeships and Careers Fair returns next month for third year

My third Havant Jobs, Apprenticeships and Careers Fair will return on Friday 9 March, with more than a thousand jobs, apprenticeships and roles on offer.

The Fair is the perfect opportunity for anyone searching for work or looking for a career change. Representatives from dozens of industries from both the public and private sectors, ranging from the Armed Forces to care agencies and retail, will be on hand to offer jobs and advice.

The event will once again be taking place at Havant Leisure Centre from 10am to 3pm and is free for anybody living in the Havant constituency.

A strong local economy is my top priority, and more jobs means rising living standards, growing investment and successful local businesses. I encourage anyone who is thinking about changing career, looking for work or considering an apprenticeship to come along on the day and find out more.

The Fair is also supported by the Havant Job Centre who will be providing advice on the day. Specialist workshops will also be provided by the National Careers Service on CV building and job interview techniques.

There is still space for exhibitors, any business wishing to get involved should email alan.mak.mp@parliament.uk for more information.

Making the ‘Pollinator Promise’ with local schoolchildren

Last month I visited St Alban’s CE Primary School in Leigh Park to see how pupils are working on an award-winning project to encourage residents to grow bee and other pollinator-friendly plants.

During the visit I signed up to the ‘Pollinator Promise’, and will be dedicating space for the project at Langstone Technology Park, where my constituency office is based.

The pupils at the school have been inviting other pupils, parents, teachers and members of their local community to pledge to allocate a dedicated one metre by one metre area outdoor space for friendly garden pollinators. The pupils have even harvested seeds from their school garden to help participants get started.

After efforts to sign-up local businesses, the school were awarded the Bees’ Needs Champions Award by DEFRA Minister Lord Gardiner.

I was inspired to see the enthusiasm and dedication pupils from St Alban’s had for the environment. The ‘Pollinator Promise’ is a fantastic project that the whole community has wholeheartedly supported. I was delighted to add my support to the campaign, and I look forward to welcoming the pupils to my constituency office at Langstone Technology Park to plant a bed of pollinator friendly plants shortly.

Anyone interested in taking the ‘Pollinator Promise’ can email pollination1@st-albans.hants.sch.uk for more information.

Unveiling new £1.6M community sports hub backed by Government funding

Last month I opened a brand new sports hub at Front Lawn Recreation Ground, a facility which will benefit Leigh Park and the wider constituency after a £1.6M investment.

Government money has been spent on the project, with the grant from Sport England enabling construction of a state-of-the-art artificial pitch as well as a community hub with changing rooms, a clubroom and kitchen.

It is expected that, thanks to the new facilities, the number of teams using the sports hub will rise from 30 to 79, with those including not just football teams but also netball and rugby.

I was also very encouraged to hear that the number of girls’ football teams will increase from 7 to 20.

I’m confident this new artificial pitch and pavilion will be a great asset to the Leigh Park area. I look forward to returning in future to see it being used. Hopefully it will help more people to get active, improving both their mental and physical health.

Promoted to Business Department in Government reshuffle

Following the New Year Government reshuffle, I have been promoted into a new role at the Business Department.

The new position will be as senior Parliamentary aide to Secretary of State Greg Clark in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Moving from a junior position at the Ministry of Justice, as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) I will act as a link between the Government and Conservative backbench MPs as new legislation is formulated, focusing on implementation of the Government’s Industrial Strategy.

Working hard for the Havant constituency remains my top priority, but I am pleased to have an additional role helping deliver the Government’s ambitious Industrial Strategy, which aims to tackle our productivity challenge and improve living standards across the country.

Elected as founding officer of Jo Cox loneliness group in Parliament

I had the privilege of being elected as a founding officer of a new cross-party group that aims to continue the legacy of murdered MP Jo Cox by tackling loneliness in the UK.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Loneliness will carry forward Jo Cox’s ambition to reduce isolation in Britain.

The APPG was formed after a successful year of campaigning by the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness. Over the last 12 months I have been a spokesperson for the group, as well as supporting the Commission’s #HappyToChat initiative at my Havant Older Persons Information Fair last year which drew a thousand attendees.

One of the key recommendations made by the commission included the creation of a new Minister for Loneliness, which was announced by the Prime Minister at a recent reception at Number 10, Downing Street. I was delighted to attend the event, and I invited Dr Carolyn Popham, Chair Dementia Friendly Hayling Island to join me. Her group has been at the forefront of the attempt to make Hayling a Dementia Friendly Island.

Their efforts have so far been very successful, and I look forward to continuing to support Dr Popham and her group. Anyone interested in getting involved or would like to take a Dementia Friends session, should email hello@dementiafriendlyhayling.org.uk or call 07555 606917.

Together through community work, such as that being done by Dementia Friendly Hayling, we can go a long way towards eradicating loneliness.

Interviewing the Chancellor for The House

As part of my role on the Editorial Board of The House, Parliament's own in-house magazine, I am conducting a series of interviews with Government Ministers, and I recently spoke to the Chancellor Philip Hammond.

In the interview, which can be found here, the Chancellor spoke about how new technologies will transform the economy, and revitalise the free-market economy.

The House magazine is a prestigious publication and is printed every week and is delivered to every Parliamentarian.

It features exclusive interviews, unique MP/Peer articles, regular columns, diaries and reviews. The magazine is totally apolitical, and the editorial board consists of MPs and Peers from all parties.
