End of Year Update 2016

Dear Friends:

As we near the end of 2016, we wanted to send a note of thanks and share recent successes made possible with your support and participation.

Successful Events. Between September and December 2016, ACG held a record eight different events with one goal: to inform Alaskans about the state’s fiscal challenges, and possible ways forward. Topics ranged from the more traditional, like oil and gas tax credits and the history of the Permanent Fund Dividend, to those focused on Alaska's unique economic opportunities given our location in the world and the quality of life it affords. For example, engaging forums considered the importance of transportation and the emerging "gig economy" to Alaska. The series ended with a panel of elected officials discussing their views on Alaska's fiscal situation.

In addition to the October 1st all-day forum, ACG partnered with a local brewpub--as a strategy to broaden our constituency. Seven evening events were held with a shorter format and attracted over 700 attendees. The feedback we received is that the caliber of speakers was exceptional, the topics were relevant, and the shorter events--in a less formal setting--contributed to more candid and engaging presentations and discussions. Check out a fun video shot at one of the events here.

Upcoming Plans. We intend to build on these successes in 2017. In response to Alaska Common Ground member requests, we are planning events in the spring on transforming transportation in Anchorage and connectivity with the Mat-Su and bringing up transportation policy experts from Calgary, Canada and Madison, Wisconsin. We’ll keep you informed on dates and details as planning continues. And look for continued fiscal and economic forums and presentations in both Anchorage and Juneau in the new year.

With Gratitude. Thank you to all of the speakers who gave generously of their time to present at our events, to everyone who volunteered to help, and to our business and foundation partners that financially supported them. We want to send a special shout out to 49th State Brewing Company for providing their venue at no charge and to everyone who renewed their membership or became a member in 2016. You were all a big part of making these events a success.

If you'd like to become a new member or make an additional donation before year end, we would be honored to have your support so we may continue providing low-cost, meaningful programs in 2017. Click here to donate now.

Your Feedback. Finally, if you would like to suggest a topic or share constructive feedback about our recent events, please don't hesitate to send those to us at

As Alaskans, we continue to face challenges ahead with our fiscal crisis but ACG remains committed to providing high-quality policy-related learning opportunities in the future.

On behalf of our board and staff, Kari, we wish you a Happy Holiday!

See you in 2017!
