Dear GPs and Practice Managers

Register for the SUMMIT Study

The SUMMIT study is the largest study of its kind in the UK.  The study started in north central and east London (NCEL) where over 80% of GP practices have signed up. SUMMIT Study is preparing to move to south east London. We are recruiting south east London GP practices to join SUMMIT Study at present, but due to the COVID-19 situation we will not begin inviting patients to become participants until it is safe to do so.

We encourage you to register your practice to join the study so that your patients are able to benefit.
The aims of the study are to detect lung cancer early using the proven method of low dose CT (LDCT) screening of at risk individuals and support the development of a new blood test for early detection of lung and other cancers.  In addition, the study will provide evidence to inform a potential future national lung cancer screening programme.
People aged 55 -77 who currently smoke or who have smoked regularly in the past are being invited to participate. To date over 11,500 patients in NCEL have received a lung health check and LDCT scan and over 300 referrals for suspected lung cancer have been made by the SUMMIT team to local hospitals.
You can see more about the study in this short video.
The SUMMIT study has been designed to involve practices without disrupting your normal routine or adding to your workload.  Practices will engage with the study in the following ways.
  1. Display a poster explaining the study to your patients
  2. Share a copy of your practice letterhead with the study so that we can invite your patients to take part in SUMMIT on your behalf.
  3. Agree a time for one of our study team members to run a clinical system search to identify eligible patients.  This process will take less than 30 minutes in most cases.  The information will be uploaded to an encrypted database.
  4. At a later stage, the study team member will revisit the practice to run a report from your clinical system on relevant patient comorbidities.
Practices will receive £250 for supporting this study, paid by the study team.
Further information on practice and patient involvement is available in the GP booklet attached or on the study website: or contact us on
