Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme Updates

Scheme Payments Update (up to 27 May 2022):
  • There have been 50,288 approvals issued to farmers since the scheme's inception. Of these, 29,723 payment applications have been submitted.
  • The total payment amount made to the scheme participants to date:  €357m plus €11.513m Transitional Spend = €368.513m.

EPA Greenhouse Gas Emissions Projections Highlight the Need for Urgent Implementation of Climate Plans and Policies

On June 1st, 2022, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published its Greenhouse Gas emissions projections for the period 2021-2040. The data shows that planned Climate policies and measures, if fully implemented, could deliver up to 28 per cent (4 per cent per annum) emissions reduction up to 2030.

BIODIVERSITY

National Biodiversity Data Centre Launches New App to Collect Pollinator Data

The purpose of the app is to address the concerns that the numbers of pollinating insects such as wild bees and flies are declining, but we need much more data to be able to track changes in abundance. You can help by doing a Flower-Insect Timed Count (FIT Count) which is designed to collect new data on the numbers of flower-visiting insects.

The National Biodiversity Data Centre and Northern Ireland Environment Agency jointly launch two new invasive species websites during Invasive Species Week 2022.

The Farming for Nature Farm Walks are Back for Another Season

These farm walks are an opportunity for Farming for Nature farmers to showcase their contribution to nature and good farming practices on their land. They are a great opportunity to meet likeminded farmers and to gain an insight into the creative and inspiring ways that farmers are working to incorporate, protect and enhance nature on their land.

Office of Public Works Launches New Biodiversity Action Strategy

A new survey carried out by the Office of Public Works (OPW) has found that over half of the population (56%) are unsure of how to help improve biodiversity, despite the overwhelming majority (90%) wanting to play their part in improving Irish biodiversity.

€20.6 Million Bog Conservation Project Unveiled as Biodiversity Week is Launched

The €20.6 million LIFE Integrated Project (IP) Wild Atlantic Nature project was officially launched in Ballycroy, Co. Mayo by Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Malcolm Noonan, and Minister of State for Land Use and Biodiversity at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Senator Pippa Hackett.

A LEADER case study on the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) Ulster Ireland Cooperation project has recently been added to the NRN website. The IAT Ulster Ireland is a coast-to-coast cross-border walking trail.

Fifth Session of NUI Galway's Rural Studies Centre Seminar Series

The fifth session of NUI Galway's Rural Studies Centre Seminar Series ‘Rural Voices’ featured Dr Karen Keaveney, Assistant Professor of Rural Development at UCD and Caroline Creamer, Director of the International Centre for Local and Regional Development, who presented findings from their ‘InPLACE: Investigating Place, Planning and Community’ Project.

Minister Hackett Launches Kerry Eco-Social Farming EIP

On the 23rd of May 2022, the Minister of State with responsibility for Land Use and Biodiversity, Senator Pippa Hackett, launched the Kerry Eco-Social Farming European Innovation Partnership (EIP). The Kerry Eco-Social Farming project was successful under Call 5 of the EIP-AGRI projects which seeks to build links between the promotion of biodiversity and farmers, local communities and the wider public.

Aurivo Leading Ladies Discussion Group Launch

The National Rural Network (NRN) was delighted to attend the launch of Aurivo Leading Ladies on Thursday, the 19th of May 2022, in Co. Sligo. Set up to highlight the importance of gender equality and diversity in the farming community, this dairy discussion group will aim to further empower and provide members with a platform to share knowledge, discuss technical issues and problem-solve topics related to the family farm.
