We Can't Breathe

How Do We Start? Where Do We Begin?

President's Message

Dear Fellowship,

Where to begin?  I suppose from the inside out.  Personally, I’ve been thinking lately of writing an apology letter to my sons.  I am so sorry to be handing them a world in so much turmoil and in so much danger.  When talking to Atticus, I quickly learned what we all know but forget when we’re stuck inside our adult minds.  I told Atticus that I was sorry there were so many problems, but I promised him that his mother and I and so many other good people are working as hard as we know how to and trying to make things better.  My nine-year-old son told me, “Dad, it’s not your fault.  And, I think most of the things in the world are pretty good.  There’s a lot that’s bad, but we can fix it.”

So, working outward… at our Fellowship, there are some important things to tell you about.  First, a reminder that the Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, August 2 at 2 PM using Zoom.  There will be availability for some members to be at the fellowship to participate safely if they are not able to access Zoom.  We should have a formal announcement out to you soon with instructions for the Zoom meeting and electronic or hard copies of committee reports soon after that.  We’re also working on the possibility of hosting some events later in the summer depending on social distancing guidelines, and as many of you know already, we’ve started hosting covenant groups, committee meetings, etc. at the fellowship again following social distancing guidelines.  But, we need your help…

As you probably know, The UU Fellowship of Lima has been an active participant in Churches United Pantry (CUP) for some time now.  During the covid-19 pandemic, the national guard has been helping with CUP’s food distribution.  The national guard will likely have to stop its work with CUP in July.  As such, CUP needs volunteers.  Currently, the National Guard are the ones that greet CUP clientele and take names, addresses, and number of people in their household.  And they also take the food to the cars and load the food into the car.  The clients do not enter the pantry or get out of their cars.  CUP volunteers have been 'secured' inside packing food into bags and readying the bags for distribution.  Mary Stapleton has also been registering the clients on PantryTrak.  CUP currently has 5 volunteers working behind the scenes.

CUP has asked that we contact potential volunteers to see how they feel about returning in some capacity.  CUP’s current volunteers will be most happy to train new volunteers on how and what to pack.  If you would be interested in helping in any capacity, please contact Jacob at 419.860.0186  as soon as possible.  The next CUP board meeting is Tuesday, June 16, so we need to get a list of potential volunteers together before then.  Our original shift was the first Monday of each month from 9 AM – 12 NOON, but those hours may change based on availability of volunteers.

Moving out into our UU community… The General Assembly of the UUA is being

held virtually this year from June 24-28.  The cost is $150 per person.  More information and registration links can be found in this newsletter.  The executive committee is discussing how many members we can afford to send to the assembly, and of course any and all members and friends are welcome to attend if they are able to register.

Moving out into our Lima community and beyond… Saturday, June 6 at 1 PM, there is a local peaceful protest planned in Lima.  See information in this newsletter.  Let’s all hope and pray (in whatever ways we feel are best) that the peaceful protests going on internationally are answered with positive, permanent change!  I have only recently learned of a movement called Campaign Zero, which I also encourage you to look into.  At https://www.joincampaignzero.org you can learn about their mission, track legislation in all fifty states, contribute, and become involved in so many ways.

I know this was a lengthy message, and I appreciate you reading it.  Please don’t stop being the beautiful people you are!  I can assure you that there are children watching who see the good you do, who see the wrong that has been done for far too long, and who have faith that we can fix it!
