August 20, 2019
Dear Pastors, Clergy, and Faith Formation Leaders,
Each year, the USCCB sets a catechetical theme for Catechetical Sunday, which is the third Sunday of September. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the important roles of parents, grandparents, guardians, catechists, RCIA teams, and all who assist them have in teaching the faith to our children and adults. Catechetical Sunday is a chance for each of us to rededicate ourselves to this mission as a community of faith.
This year, the Archdiocese of Detroit will celebrate Catechetical Sunday with the theme of Encountering the Risen Christ as part of the next phase of Unleash the Gospel: Sent on Mission. Each parish is invited to participate and celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 15, 2019.
The following resources are available to parishes to promote Encountering the Risen Christ:
All of the above resources are available for download here.
- A commissioning prayer for Mass on Catechetical Sunday
- Prayer cards for catechists, parents, grandparents, guardians and for families
- A Certificate of Commissioning for catechists
- Classroom resources for faith formation leaders to help children encounter Christ through the 2019-2020 school year
- A sample bulletin article
The prayer cards (sold in packs of 100) can be ordered from the Archdiocese of Detroit Print Shop. To ensure that your parish receives prayer cards in time for Catechetical Sunday, please have your orders in no later than Thursday, August 29.
We invite you to promote and celebrate Catechetical Sunday 2019 on September 15 and discuss with your parish staff the best way to celebrate this day at your parish.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Steve Pullis
Director, Department of Evangelization, Catechesis and Schools
