CERN Accelerator School, 25 May-7 June 2020, Sint-Michielsgestel
Registration is now open for the CERN Accelerator School’s course on Mechanical Materials Engineering for Particle Accelerators and Detectors.
For the first time in the history of the CERN Accelerator School, a course on Mechanical engineering is organized. The focus of the course will be to orient mechanical engineers from their general knowledge obtained during their past education to techniques and solutions, which are specific for accelerator applications.
In the mornings, a complete lecture program is foreseen covering a wide range of mechanical engineering aspects. These lectures are complemented by a series of application reports in the field of accelerators. In the afternoons four blocks of so-called “hands-on” experiments are foreseen, during which the students will be guided to do practical work including visits of professional companies close by.
Since a student without prior knowledge of mechanical engineering will not be able to follow the course, we have prepared a self-evaluation test on our website. We kindly ask every interested student to exercise this test and apply only for the course, if a sufficient high score is obtained in the test.
For more information and application, please visit the school website:

Preparation of an Accelerator Innovation Pilot Project
The Horizon 2020 call INFRAINNOV-04-2020 for Innovation Pilot projects is now open (deadline for submission 17 March 2020) and our accelerator community is preparing a submission for “Innovation in accelerator technologies”. The new project is called “I-FAST” (Innovation Fostering in Accelerator Science and Technology”) and will be mainly devoted to promote innovative ideas and technologies developed in collaboration between academia and industry.
It is expected that, if approved, I-FAST will follow after ARIES and cover with an EC contribution of 10 Million € the period between May 2021 and April 2025.
In collaboration with TIARA (Test Infrastructure and Accelerator Research Area), ARIES has launched a successful call for proposals for actions to be included in the new project, receiving 101 submissions of excellent quality, covering all fields of accelerator-related research. A Committee of 15 members nominated by the Directors of the TIARA institutions and 4 industry representatives has evaluate the proposals accordingly to a set of criteria.
The selection has been extremely difficult because of the high quality of the proposals. Every proposal was evaluated by three committee members, and a final note on “coherence with the priorities of the accelerator community” was collectively attributed at a final plenary meeting.
The process resulted in the selection of 36 actions out of the 101 submitted, 20 without modifications and 16 with some corrections, in particular on the requested budget. The selected actions are now being grouped in Work Packages, the budget is being finalised, and the preparation of the proposal has started. Proposals that were not accepted at this call will have another opportunity to participate since the committee has decided to reserve a fraction of the budget for a second internal call that will take place after the start of the new project.

ARIES at the CERN Open Days on 14-15 September 2019
ARIES was present at the CERN Open Days organised at CERN on 14-15 September 2019. Here is an example of the ARIES activities presented on both days: our testimonial is the captain of the tugboat that was used for the ship exhaust cleaning tests.

Editorial Series on Accelerator Science Technology
The Editorial Series on Accelerating Science welcomes submissions from ARIES researchers to be published in the format of a monograph.
Launched in 2008 as a joint initiative of the CARE project and its successor EuCARD, publications include Master's and PhD thesis, reviews and other works on the developments in accelerator science.
Copies from the Series up to Vol.18 volumes can be ordered here, free of charge. From Vol. 18 onwards, copies can be ordered here. If you would like to contribute, please contact us.

To acknowledge EC support in your publications...
Please do not forget to include the EC acknowledgement in all your publications (journal articles, conference papers, presentations, internal notes, etc.) related to ARIES and to upload a copy of your publication on Zenodo.
A tutorial on how to upload a publication has been made available at:
https://aries.web.cern.ch/content/aries-zenodo-tutorial
Be aware that there have been cases of publications being refused by the Commission because they indicate more than one EU project as funding source – which is part of a recent action against double funding.
To avoid problems, you are advised to choose only one EU project as main funding source of your work, to be acknowledged with the standard mention:

A company active in the domain of isotopes is seeking a young post-doc for the study of an ion source and mass spectrometer for lanthanides. The initial contract is for 6 months with possible extensions and the place of work is in the Geneva area, with extensive stays at CERN. If interested please send a CV to maurizio.vretenar@cern.ch.
