PLEASE REMEMBER DIFFERENT BRAINS ON #GIVINGTUESDAY

Welcome to the Late November Newsletter for Different Brains!

Welcome to another installment of the Different Brains® newsletter! As November draws to a close, we have many great stories from the world of neurodiversity to be thankful for! We heard Lili Reinhart of the CW's "Riverdale" open up about anxiety, learned about the role light therapy may serve in treating bipolar, saw a man with Down Syndrome give a speech to Congress about life with the condition, and found out about a new gaming device that may help people with ADHD.
Meanwhile, Darlene Lancer, J.D., M.F.T. discussed the important role gratitude plays in emotional health and gave tips to feel thankful despite challenges, Tom McGranahan Jr. explored how different options and support for epilepsy have changed since his diagnosis in the 1960s, and Marcy Willard, Ph.D., NCSP highlighted the importance of free information being available to the parents of the neurodiverse.
Exploring Different Brains, our weekly talk show hosted by our founder Dr. Hackie Reitman, featured three diverse examples of people making a difference for the neurodiverse. First, Dr. Marlo Payne Thurman (a professor at the University of Northern Colorado and a private education consultant) defined what “twice-exception” people are while highlighting the challenges they face, and talked about her own recovery from a TBI (traumatic brain injury). Then, Lynn Miner-Rosen, M.Ed., BCC, CDCS. (a Board Certified ADHD Coach and Career Coach for College Students and Young
Adults) discussed how she thinks people with ADHD and other neurodiverse conditions can best transition into careers, and how parents and society can support those individuals. Finally, Dr. Chris Stout (a clinical psychologist, a philanthropist, entrepreneur, author, podcast host, a founding member of the Center for Global Initiatives, and the vice president of research and data analytics for ATI - pictured above) spoke about the importance of mental health as the foundation for the success of all cultures, humanitarian work throughout the world, and what it was like working for the United Nations.
In a special holiday episode of Spectrumly Speaking, our podcast dedicated to women on the autism spectrum, hosts Katherine Cody, Psy.D. and Becca Lory, CAS, BCCS cover common challenges faced by people on the autism spectrum during the holiday season, and review tools and strategies to get stay meltdown free! They cover traveling, hosting, gift giving and receiving, changes in routine, and many more topics, while giving tips not only for those on the spectrum, but for their loved ones. We even put out a free companion handout of tips (click here to see it)! Remember- the show is available on DifferentBrains.org, and is also available on: iTunes | Stitcher | SoundCloud

A MESSAGE FROM FOUNDER & PRESIDENT HAROLD "HACKIE" REITMAN, M.D.
As those of us here in the United States move from celebrating Thanksgiving to the rest of the holiday season, I wanted to give thanks to our dedicated team at Different Brains. As you may know, everything on DifferentBrains.org is created by our neurodiverse staff. But this team, at the same time, is also training and mentoring other neurodiverse individuals in the production of video and multimedia content, and so much more. This also allows us to help them develop social skills, while learning to share their personal perspectives and insights. As they help Different Brains® advocate for so many, they learn to advocate for themselves. Through this, we hope to play a role in developing the future leaders of the movement for acceptance of the differences in our brains!

So, thank you to our great interns, mentees, staff, board members, allies, and everyone else working behind the scenes. Thanks to our amazing roster of bloggers and over 100 interview guests representing neurodiversity leaders from around the world. And, thank YOU for supporting us in our mission. We are excited to continue growing, and have big improvements in the works that we hope will expand our message even further. Society needs to understand and embrace neurodiversity for the benefit of ALL of us!
