Staff Transition, Black History Celebrations, & Illness Prevention

Head of School Message | March 4, 2020

Hello DC Bilingual community,

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you Friday, March 6, will be Jenna Umansky’s last day at DC Bilingual. Jenna has recently decided to transition from her role as our school’s director of student support services. We respect her decision and want to support her and the special education and student support teams during this period of transition. Principals Eleni McCabe and Rohini Ramnath will now lead the student support team in collaboration with our Special Education Manger, Nadia Dodson.

Our students are the most important part of our community. Ensuring they feel supported and experience the best service at DC Bilingual during this transition and moving forward is a priority. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns about this news or any other related matters.

Thank you for your trust and support with these adjustments.

Last week, DC Bilingual celebrated Black History Month with a living wax museum on Tuesday and a homecoming celebration on Friday. We are incredibly proud of our students who so vibrantly highlighted black excellence in history, culture, and art. The performances on Friday showcased sounds and movements inspired by homecoming celebrations across the country at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Tuesday’s wax museum drew the attention of the Public Charter School Board’s monthly newsletter. Thank you to the teachers and staff who poured their hearts into planning and executing this year’s festivities! Watch the full celebration on DC Bilingual's Facebook page.

Public Health Announcement: COVID-19

At DC Bilingual, it is important for our community to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all families and staff. With flu season well underway, we are undertaking additional preventative measures to make sure that our building is clean and safe for all to use.

Those measures include: school building interior deep cleaning (three days a week all tables, chairs, door knobs), ensuring hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes are available in all classrooms & offices, sharing the most up to date information from the Department of Health with families and staff (see attached), "How to Wash Your Hands" posters in all bathrooms and our school nurses are scheduling hand washing demonstrations for our students.

Please remember the school policy as it relates to illness and keep students at home for 24 hours until they are symptom-free if a child has any of the below symptoms:

  • Fever over 100.4o during the past 24 hours;
  • A cold in active stages;
  • A sore throat or swollen neck glands;
  • Undiagnosed rash or skin changes;
  • Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours;
  • Head lice, ringworm, or other parasites that have not been treated;
  • Any other untreated contagious disease such as conjunctivitis (pink eye); or
  • Difficulty in breathing or respiratory changes

Additionally, we encourage everybody in the community to follow the CDC's recommended preventative methods to stop or slow the spread of illness:

  1. Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  2. Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  3. Disinfect all workspaces, objects, and toys routinely
  4. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve
  5. Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  6. Encourage all parents, children, and staff with symptoms to stay home until symptom-free without medication for at least 24 hours

Charter Office Updates

Effective in the 2020-2021 school year, all schools will be required to implement the District's updated immunization attendance policy, which requires schools in the District of Columbia to both verify and track student compliance year round.

With respect to any student that lacks up to date immunizations, DC Bilingual will be required to notify the parent or guardian immediately in writing that within 20 school days from the date of the written notification, the student shall obtain necessary immunizations or be kept out of school.

Below are resources regarding the District of Columbia's immunization requirements and we encourage you to visit the Department of Health's website to learn more:

  1. Immunization Requirements
  2. DC Pediatric Immunization Locations

DC Bilingual is hiring!

It’s that time of year again when we look to hire for the upcoming school year. In our experience, the best new hires come from community referrals because they are typically a good fit, excellent contributors, and stay with the school longer! If you know someone who would be a good addition to the DC Bilingual community please share the job opportunities advertised on our website.

Important upcoming dates:

  • Next Hive full day programs will be April 3, April 10, May 1, and June 12. Registration is open for all of these dates through Ezchildtrack.
