Extended Closure, Distance Learning, & Ways to Support

Head of School Message | March 24, 2020

Hello DC Bilingual community,

The temporary shut-down of our school community and city due to the coronavirus has been a challenging situation for all of us. As we navigate this public health crisis together, we continue to be humbled by the strong support and selflessness of our entire community, including our students, teachers, staff, and families. During this difficult time, we find strength in our LEAD values: learn languages, earn respect, act responsibly, and do your best. Please emphasize these values whenever possible with your students throughout their time at home. We miss seeing you every day and cannot wait to welcome you back to school as soon as conditions allow.

On Friday, March 21, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that DC Public Schools will remain closed through April 24. DC Bilingual will follow this schedule and extend our school’s closure to April 24 as well.

Many of you have asked about our non-teaching staff with the extended closure. Our staff goes above and beyond for DC Bilingual every day, and we have arranged to maintain all of our salaried and hourly staff through the current expected closure period.

This week, DC Bilingual students will begin distance learning. Families can find electronic copies of the distance learning packets on the DC Bilingual website. Our team distributed printed copies of the packets last week. If you were unable to get a printed copy and would like one mailed to you, please email us at info@dcbilingual.org.

DC Bilingual’s COVID-19 webpage also has all school communications regarding this emergency and information about COVID-19 symptoms and prevention.

If you have any questions about distance learning or how to access additional supports during this challenging time, please reach out to us at info@dcbilingual.org.

As a reminder, we have postponed DC Bilingual in Bloom, our annual fundraiser and celebration. We are hopeful that we can gather soon to celebrate together. In the meantime, please consider supporting DC Bilingual in the following ways:

  • Donate to DC Bilingual. During this closure, DC Bilingual will invest nearly $3,000 weekly to support our families with academic, social, and emotional resources, and linkages to the many other organizations in our city working with us on the frontline. A gift of any amount helps to make this possible. Click here to donate.
  • Help us stay connected. Record yourself having fun, doing something creative, or expressing your LEAD values and share with the DC Bilingual community. Tag us @DCBilingual and use hashtag #DCBLEAD. You can also email your video to us directly.
  • Call a student, friend, or family in the DC Bilingual community to connect and see how they are doing. If you know someone in the DC Bilingual community that needs support, please email info@dcbilingual.org. Social distancing should not mean isolation.

Thank you for all you are doing to support your students, families, and community during this challenging time. We hope you and your family stay safe and healthy. We recognize that you are balancing extraordinary responsibilities during this time and ask that you reach out to us with any questions, concerns, or are in need of support.

Did you know Ms. Lola, DC Bilingual's Food & Wellness Director, started a YouTube channel? Ms. Lola (and Nico) are recording fun cooking demonstrations you can do at home with your family. Watch the video above of them making delicious, healthy muffins. Try it yourself with your family and let us know how it goes! ❤
