Coronavirus Update, Spelling Bee & Step Afrika Performance

Head of School Message | March 11, 2020

Hello DC Bilingual community,

I would like to thank each of you for your support of our school this week amidst the emerging coronavirus threat in DC. On Monday, we sent an email to families in which we shared the preventative measures we are taking at DC Bilingual (English / Spanish). We continue to pay very close attention to the guidance of local and federal officials regarding the coronavirus (or COVID-19) (For more information, visit DC Health). The safety and health of our community is always our number one priority.  We ask that you review these resources to help you and your family prepare for disruptions due to Covid-19:

  1. COVID-19 Symptoms Graphic: Graphic explaining the symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19)
  2. COVID-19 Self-Assessment Graphic: Graphic guide for residents who believe they may have been exposed to coronavirus (COVID-19)
  3. Spanish Translation of the DME COVID-19 FAQ
Additionally, please review our guidance for illness at school with your child (as appropriate). If a student has any of the following symptoms, the student should not attend school AND the student’s parent/guardian should call 202-750-6674 and ask for the DC Bilingual Office.
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Flu-like symptoms (severe body aches/ weakness)

If a student develops these symptoms at school, the student should report to their teacher who will work with the school nurse to determine if early dismissal is warranted, and parents/guardians will be contacted.

Please encourage your student to do the following:

  • Wash hands frequently and thoroughly
  • Use hand sanitizer frequently
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Stay away from people who have cold or flu symptoms
  • Avoid touching frequently-touched common surfaces (e.g., doorknobs, light switches, counter tops)

As we continue to monitor the threat in collaboration with school leaders sector-wide, we are working to prepare in the event that circumstances change and modifications to our regular activities and procedures become necessary. Our hope is that we will not need to make significant changes. However, to be prudent, we are taking several steps now, including:

  • Establishing response protocols should a community member be affected; and
  • Exploring ways for continuity in student learning and meals for families-in-need in the event that we need to temporarily close.
Step Afrika!, a professional dance company, performed for our students as a culmination of the celebration of Black History Month. Students learned step in preparation for the Black History Month performance, saw steppers from Howard, and finally they watched a professional company. There were three performances and students learned some basic step moves from each performance.

DC Bilingual in Bloom, our annual spring fundraiser

As much as we know that we could all use a good party right now, discretion is the better part of valor. We are working to identify a date in the not-so-distant future when we can celebrate and raise funds together for the school we love. We will communicate our plans as they unfold. If you have already purchased a ticket or sponsorship package, we will be in touch by email about next steps. Thank you for your patience and continued support.

DC Bilingual Spelling Bee

Let’s celebrate all of our amazing spellers at DC Bilingual’s annual Spelling Bee this Friday, March 13! This is one of our school’s favorite events and we’re very proud of this year’s finalists. The winners of the school-wide competition will go on to compete against spelling bee winners from other schools in DC. If you would like to watch the competition, tune into DC Bilingual’s Facebook for the live stream.

Last week at the Hive:

  • Last Friday, students from Pre-K3 to Kindergarten enjoyed Ms. Diane's bubble making workshop. Students learned how to cut bamboo to make a blowing instrument, then they mixed ingredients to make a perfect bubble solution. At the end they blew magical bubbles for all!
  • The Hive is very proud of the 3rd and 4th grade students for choosing to volunteer with the teachers from lower grades. We have students volunteering in Kindergarten and Pre-K4 from 1-6:00 PM on Fridays. The leadership and hard work these students are showing is very impressive!
  • Ms. Kaydee continues to teach yoga workshops every Friday. She shared beautiful photographs (see below) of students engaging in grounding their bodies, balance, strength, and relaxation. It was a great way to end the school week!

What’s new at the Hive?

It’s about to be Spring, so that means it’s time to play soccer! Soccer practice with Mr. Pierre and Mr. Jonathan will be held from Monday, April 30 to Thursday, May 21. The schedule by grade will be:

  • Tuesdays - 2nd and 3rd grade

Important upcoming dates:

  • Next Hive full day programs will be April 3, April 10, May 1, and June 12. Registration is open for all of these dates through Ezchildtrack.

If your child is not normally registered in Hive on Thursdays, they will need to be picked up from school at dismissal time, 1:00 PM. DC Bilingual is hiring!

It’s that time of year again when we look to hire for the upcoming school year. In our experience, the best new hires come from community referrals because they are typically a good fit, excellent contributors, and stay with the school longer! If you know someone who would be a good addition to the DC Bilingual community please share the job opportunities advertised on our website.
