The IEC’s Buddy Program is designed to introduce international/new-to-Canada first year students to upper year domestic and international mentors, as well as fellow incoming students. The program provides a supportive and friendly environment to navigate your first year in Canada and at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM)!
Wondering what Canadian university is like? There are a few things you should get from your university experience that the buddy program will help with:
Making friends in University can open many new experiences you may not have had otherwise. Additionally, networking early with peers, professors and staff will help you in the future. People you meet on campus could help you find a job, provide references, or connect you to other people/resources.
Don’t underestimate the power of people!
As a student, your Co-Curricular Record (CCR) is very important. Any University recognized event, activity, program, etc. that you participate in on-campus is added to your CCR. When applying to jobs or graduate programs in the future, this record will help you provide a reliable list of your extracurricular involvement at school. It sounds a lot more intimidating than it is! Many people gain CCR recognition by doing things they enjoy or are passionate about, such as being an executive of a club on campus.
Navigating campus can be difficult with so many abbreviations, buildings and departments. UTM provides students with many resources including the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre, the Health & Counselling Centre (HCC), the Career Centre, the International Education Centre (IEC), and many more! Learn what resources on campus can help you find the support you need when you’re struggling academically, socially or mentally from your mentors!
Through their own journey at UTM, our upper year students have learned many shortcuts, tips, and tricks to being a UTM student. These tips could be helpful when you’re in an unknown situation, and save you from spending more time, money, or effort on unnecessary things. For example, did you know that the Bookstore has a Price Match policy? If you find a textbook for a better price, the bookstore might match it!
Getting a jumpstart on these things will help you succeed in future years. Join our International & New-to-Canada Student Buddy Program to receive a mentor to help guide you through everything mentioned above! The program is open to first year international, new-to-Canada, or exchange students and permanent residents. Click herefor more information.
