NEW SCHOOLS FOR CHICAGO | JULY 2017

School may not be back in session yet, but the New Schools for Chicago team has been busily preparing for the fall, partnering with community groups and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) for an exciting new change to the high school enrollment process.

Last week, our Kids First Chicago field team trained community-based organizations from across the city on the school enrollment process—helping to arm them with methods and tools to help families choose the right school for their children.

Together with participants, we explored the new GoCPS application process (including an exercise on how the matching algorithm will work), reviewed steps for students and parents to take to explore and rank schools, and underscored the need to communicate School Quality Ratings Policy (SQRP) level ratings to parents.

"The training gave me more information about school performance. Based on the data, some schools are performing better than how I thought they were. I probably had some biases about those schools, but seeing the data and the ratings changed my thinking about those schools...It was one of the best presentations that I have ever attended."  —Carl Peterson, Workshop Attendee

New Schools continues to be a valued partner to CPS around the successful implementation of the single application for high school students.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
New Schools for Chicago’s new school-quality focused report, Who is sitting in those seats? The Students Most Affected by Chicago's Lowest Performing Schools, has generated a lot of buzz in the media. The report was featured in a Chicago Sun-Times article earlier this month and many partners have amplified its overarching message—more high-quality seats for all Chicago students.

Our report analyzes school performance from 2011 to 2017, and identifies which kids, families, and neighborhoods are most impacted by low-performing schools. We worked hard to make sure this was a fair and balanced piece that both gives credit to the tremendous progress Chicago Public Schools has made while also calling out a need to do more.

We look forward to sharing more with you in the months to come, and hope you will consider learning more about our work through the links below.
