Update on the Restoration

Work on the historic Opera House Theater continues!

The Newport Opera House Theater and Performing Arts Center is excited about the ongoing progress of our work on the restoration of our historic theater.  We have completed the abatement work – another important step forward!

In all older buildings, asbestos abatement is an integral part of the construction process.  The three-week, professionally administered abatement in the Opera House included removal of VAT floor tiles, steam pipe insulation, plus floor and wall coverings. Completion of this portion of abatement clears the way for continued selective demolition within the Opera House to open walls, clear the way, and set the stage for the exciting renovations ahead.

Stay tuned for more updates. You can see more photos of the abatement work -- and follow the progress of the construction -- on our Facebook page!

Take Your Seat in Newport History!

Be a part of the Opera House future--sponsor a new Theater seat today!

We invite you to “Take Your Seat in Newport History” and be a part of the future of the Newport Opera House Theater and Performing Arts Center!  Have your name permanently inscribed on one of the new Theater Seats in the renovated Opera House Theater—it’s a great way to show your support and be a part of the theater’s restoration.

The new Opera House Theater seats are hand-crafted and feature plush cushions, rich upholstery, wood backs, scrolled armrests  and replicas of the original cast-iron end standards.  The restored Opera House Theater will have a grand total of 700 seats.

Dedicate one of the elegant new seats in the Opera House Theater to honor a special friend or loved one. Relive special memories at the Opera House – that first date, a favorite movie, an unforgettable performance. The name of your choice will be permanently inscribed on a brass nameplate and affixed to one of our plush new theater seats.

And remember, every dollar we raise through our Theater Seat Campaign, helps us match the $4.2 million State Cultural Facilities Grant for the Opera House restoration. Your tax-deductible contribution will be a lasting tribute to your support of the Newport Opera House Theater and Performing Arts Center.
All contributions will be used to restore the Opera House Theater and to set the stage to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the original opening of the Opera House Theater in 1867.

Another exciting Opera House Soiree!

A beautiful performance by the Island Moving Company

The Newport Opera House Theater and Performing Arts Center was excited to host the sixth event of the Opera House Soiree Series. This Soiree was hosted by Opera House Board Member Richard Crisson, and long-time arts leader in the community, Rod O’Hanley, in their beautiful garden!

Guests were treated to wonderful performances by the Island Moving Company, Newport’s Contemporary Ballet Company, and a favorite of our community. Two sets of dancers performed in separate areas of the garden, giving guests an opportunity to enjoy different pieces and performances.

The dancers then offered insights into their work and shared stories of their
exciting trip and series of performances in Kazakhstan.
Island Moving Company toured Kazakhstan last month to dance with the Samruk Dance Company as part of the U.S. Consulate sponsored cultural exchange to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the US/Kazakhstan relations.

It was an exciting evening of dance, celebration, and great conversation about the progress of the restoration of our historic theater.  Our thanks to Island Moving Company for their performance, and a special thanks to our hosts, Richard Crisson and Rod O’Hanley, for their gracious event and for being such strong supporters of the Opera House Theater – and the arts in our community!

A Great Independence Day Celebration on Washington Square!

Opera House Theater joins in Newport's annual festivities and celebration

We were excited to join in Newport’s Washington Square annual Independence Day celebration!  What a great day for music, festivities, reading of the Declaration of Independence, a pie eating contest, wonderful patriotic outfits -- and celebrating Independence Day with the community and our neighbors on Washington Square.

All enjoyed the wonderful music performed by the Newport Community Band.  After their performance, the reading of the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the Old Colony House by Sons of Liberty member Roy Lauth was a patriotic and moving moment for all.  And the Newport Artillery Company 21 cannon salute was a perfect ending to the morning’s festivities!

We are proud to be part of Washington Square, and to have participated in Newport’s traditional Independence Day celebration.  Our supporters were excited to share with those in attendance the excitement that a restored Opera House Theater will bring to Washington Square.  We look forward to seeing you soon!
