May 14: 2018 Yinghua School Board Elections

2018 School Board election results: Annie Nelson and Pamella Stommes were elected; incumbents Paul Haller, Joel Luedtke, and Amanda Schneider were reelected. Registrar Suzanne Reider did double dismissal duty with a mobile ballot box. Melody Ng and Jasmine Lu encouraged Door 2 parents to vote.

TECHNOVATION: Girls Solve Community Problems with Technology

Yinghua team "Earth's Best Friend Forever (eBFF)," comprised of Rachel (4C), Alexandra (7A), and Mira (4D) took homeTechnovation [MN] Regional Winner 2018 trophies at last weekend's Appapalooza event! The team will advance to the semi-finals for a chance to compete in the global Technovation challenge. Yinghua's four all-girls teams, with participants in grades 4 through 7, spent three months creating mobile apps. Congratulations to all the teams for their very hard work, and thanks to all the parents who helped make this possible!

The Technovation Challenge inspires and enables teen girls to dream up, design, code, and create a marketing pitch for a mobile phone app. Working with professional mentors, all-girl teams develop a real-world combination of technical and entrepreneurial skills. The apps need to solve a community problem. This year, 74 teams participated, and nine move on to the next competition level.

Yinghua joined the Technovation Challenge last year with one team. This year, Yinghua had four teams. Go Dragons!

Create A Play

Last week in Aftercare, students had great fun during the Create-a-Play: Night at the Museum Enrichment class. SteppingStone Theatre led this romp--what happens when a sleepy security guard is on patrol? Students worked collaboratively to create an original play while exploring concepts such as idea contribution, ensemble work, story structure, and character choices.

Eat Street Was Great Fun

Thirteen families volunteered to create Yinghua Eat Street, a street-market style event in the cafeteria. Guests received tickets for tacos, gyoza (Japanese dumplings), Tonkasu (Japanese pork chops), Korean hand rolls, fried noddles, and rice dishes. Best of all, there were also desserts--chocolate chip cookies, flan, alfajorcitos, shortbread cookies, and bubble tea.

Lead coordinator Vickee Nelson (Ruan Laoshi) thanks Ying-Fling, for making this event possible. She encourages families to think creatively about group activities that might be offered at next year's Ying-Fling fundraiser!

Physical Education Updates

  • The Popsicle Run took place today. All classes that would usually have PE on a Friday will make up their wheels day on the next day when they have PE class.
  • Lessons Learned From the Popsicle Run: work hard, set a goal, do your best, and encourage others.
  • All Enrichment classes and Yinghua Academy Conservatory of Music music lessons are finished for this school year. Thanks to all who participated. Watch for a survey coming soon so you can provide feedback to make our after-school programs even better!
  • Note that music lesson registration for the 2018-19 school year begins before school starts. Watch for information in the summer emails you'll receive in August.

May 15: YACA General Membership Meeting

Tuesday was a beautiful day to be outside for the Used Uniform Sale in the front courtyard. Thank you to those who volunteered and to shoppers who saved lots of money on clothing as they stocked up on tops, bottoms, and outerwear. Volunteers report that the sale earned upwards of $1,000 for the school. If you have the ability to control the weather ; ) and would like to help with future Used Uniform Sales, contact The sale opened at 4:30 and continued through 7 p.m. to catch attendees as they arrived for YACA's annual meeting.

YACA Board elections took place at the meeting. Ria Maharaj (Keenan 1A and Rylan 3E) and Laurie McKichan (Hazel 1B) were newly elected and incumbents Wynee Igel and Becky Wright were reelected. Urbae Hall (Adam 4C and Naila 6B) was appointed to serve as CC Co-Liaison. Continuing YACA Board members Peter Fontaine (Chair), Julie Phillips (Secretary), Randi Traub-Girtz (Member at Large), Vanessa Beckett (Community Chair), and Ivette Tejeda-Little (Fundraising Chair) are eager to work with new and continuing members, and Julie Phillips reminded everyone at the meeting that YACA Board meetings are open to everyone. Come to a meeting and get involved!

Dr. Jules Nolan was the evening's guest speaker. Her talk was not recorded, but she gave us her helpful handouts on Social Emotional Learning and School Success. Highlights included tips on building children's mindful practices such as feeling and noticing your heart beat, deep breathing, paying attention without judgement, and using words to talk about feelings and relationships. Children who have more words to describe feelings are better able to manage how they feel--you have to "name it to tame it." A tool called "Mood Meter" teaches emotion colors and words. Other resources mentioned include Mind Yeti, Headspace, Stop, Breathe & Think, Mind Up, and Go Noodle
