President's Report

Sport and Rec Grants Presented
Local Liberal member Tim Whetstone visited our club recently to present two grants on behalf of the Department of Sport and Recreation.
We are very grateful to the State Government for this support and believe that it is an indication that we are setting ourselves up in a professional, responsible manner.

Clubhouse Upgrade Progress
As you will have noticed the front of our clubhouse is undergoing a drastic change. The new portico and rendered front wall are an indication of things to come.Bob Cornwall is about to oversee the construction of a large storage room an the right hand side of the entrance. This will ultimately provide the "canvas" for a Gary Duncan sculpture. Luke Hampshire will be involved in the construction of this along with the landscaping and paving of the area in front of the clubhouse. The photo below will soon be nothing but a memory.
Last Sunday we had a busy-bee to prepare the site for the coming rebuild. Thanks to Nev Hamood, Luke Hampshire, Twisty Martin, Chick Hansen, Tell Fisher, Kim Sampson, Matt Starkey, Aaron Brinsley and Paul Keane for making the job very manageable.

Here we see our Honourable Member for Chaffey Mr Tim Whetstone visiting our club to  formally recognise our upgrade. Thanks for coming Tim.

Captain's Report

My report for August and September.
August, the club Champion month, kicked off on Saturday the 3rd with the second qualifying round for the club championship which also happened to be the first round of the Presidents trophy…still with me?
Dougie Johns won the A Grade with net 70, beating Rob Formiatti, Ady Selfe and Macca all with net 72.
B Grade saw Dave Hastwell romp it home with net 66 beating Ian Girdler and Matt Starkey, both with net 71. This win by Dave also won him the Privilege cup.
Sunday the 4th was the third qualifying round for the club championship and the second round of the Presidents trophy. Nev McPherson won the A Grade with a net 70 with Jordan Wright second on 72.
B Grade was won by Ian Girdler with net 70 and Rob Chabrel second with net 73. Ian Girdler won the Presidents trophy with his net 71 and 70 in both days.
Saturday the 10th was the Pump Doctor Trophy-Stableford. Larry Fragomeni won the day with 38 points with the next best score was 33 from both Ian Winen and Jason Bowers. Thanks to the Pump Doctor/Rob Formiatti for his support. This round was the third round of the Joker rounds. The winner this round was Ian Girdler with 28 Joker points.

Saturday the 17th was for the Paul Tucker Surveying Trophy-Par. Kevin ‘Twisty’ Martin won on a countback over Mick Cenko with +2. Thanks to Paul Tucker Surveying for his support.
Saturday the 24th was the Club Championship Final. A Grade was close in the end with Tyson
Swanbury needing to sink the putt on the 36 th (18 th ) hole for a playoff but lipped out. Paul Keane defeated Mohinda Ubhey in B Grade and Dave Hastwell defeated Rob Chabrel in C Grade.
Sunday 25th was the Swinstead Trophy-Stableford. Jason Bowers won on a countback from Larry Fragomeni both with 38 points. Thanks to the Swinsteads for their support.

September began with the monthly medal round on the 7th , thanks to 23rd Street Distillery for
sponsoring the day. A Grade saw Paul Jericho win on a countback from Twisty Martin, both with a respectable net 71. Then came B Grade. Mick Cenko finally had a big one with a net 68……but, alas, not good enough to beat Jason Bowers with a big net 62. Either way, they all had some pretty good prizes from 23rd Street Distillery. A massive thanks to them for supporting us. Because of his terrific score, Jason also won the Privilege cup for the month of September.
Saturday the 14th was the Barmera Club round-Stableford and the 4th and final round of the Morrell Clan Shield. Mike Eisner took out the win with 42 points with Kym Sampson second with 38. They received vouchers from the Barmera Club.
Saturday the 21st was the Kingston Estate Trophy-Stableford. Kevin ‘Twisty’ Martin won the day on a countback with 41 points.,

Lady Captain's Report

Hi everyone
Glad to see Wendy and Brian back from their trip overseas. A lot has happened since our last newsletter. We played our championships back in August, this year we had 2 grades for the first time in about 10 years. The B grade final was played between Tammy Worsfold and Pat Hamood this was a very good match with Tammy winning on the 18th hole.

The A grade was played between Sally Minns and Meredith Williams . Sally got her game going early and Meredith was 5 down after 5 holes. A good game was had after with Meredith slowly pegging back to win 5/4.
Meredith won the best nett with nett 70 for the championships/

Several of our ladies have travelled to various other clubs with great results.
Sally won the A grade best nett at the 2-day event in Berri with a nett 71.

We had our sponsors day recently to say thank you for their ongoing support and a few of the ladies came out to see the course and its improvements. They also had a tour of our clubhouse to see the alterations.
We have been averaging 9 girls a week but would love to see more.
Closing day for the winter season is Sat 19th October, so we all hope we have a good turn out of members and friends..
Thank you and good golfing

Meredith mentioned our sponsors, let's not forget them!

Upgrade Photos!

Our new renovations are coming along nicely. Kevin Martin, Luke Hampshire and many other people have been spotted lately digging lots of holes.Thank you to everyone for their support at this time.
A big thank you all of the people who have contributed to this amazing addition to our club-rooms.
Spotted Brian Finn on the mower, giving up his Wednesday golf this week. Thanks Brian for hopping into the mower seat (and other jobs) whilst Dave is away for a couple of weeks.
The new 4th green, minus one bunker.

The Voice from the Clubhouse

It was a sunny Saturday morning, a little before 8 a.m., I was on the first hole at The Oaks of St. George Golf Club and beginning my pre-shot routine, when a piercing voice came over the clubhouse loudspeaker:

"Would the gentleman on the woman's tee back up to the men's tee please!"

I could feel every eye on the course looking at me. I was still deep in my routine, seemingly impervious to the interruption.

Again the announcement: "Would the man on the woman's tee kindly back up to the men's tee."

I simply ignored the guy and kept concentrating, when once more, the voice yelled, "Would the man on the woman's tee back up to the men's tee. please?!?!"

I finally stopped, turned around, cupped my hands and shouted back: "Would the jerk with the microphone please keep quiet and let me play my second shot!"
