Machine Covers working with RNLI
We have been delighted and honoured this month to supply and install some Repar2 guarding to a Colchester lathe and a Bridgeport milling machine at the RNLI headquarters in Poole, Dorset.

This purpose-built facility for new boat production and boat refurbishment opened in 2013. It has enabled the organisation to move from an old ship-building site to a state-of-the-art lifeboat manufacturing centre. Located right next door to the lifeboat crew training centre, it is perfectly situated to give all crew trainees and life savers an insight into the technology and equipment that is aboard these amazing vessels.
The move to the new facility naturally initiated a review of the organisation’s production methods, its tooling and its machinery. It was at this point that we were asked to carry out a survey of some of the machines and to advise on the necessary guarding required to comply with current safety standards.
The time-frame was short as the organisation’s only lathe and only milling machine were both out of action with essential work needing to be completed. We understood the urgency and reacted quickly.

Within two weeks we had carried out the survey, proposed a solution, produced a quotation and, after receiving an order, fitted the guarding to the machines.

This was a huge challenge from a time perspective but we were pleased to execute this work for such an exceptional organisation.

Many of us have seen lifeboats going out to sea in treacherous conditions, crewed by volunteers from all walks of life who are skilled in the job of saving lives and other vessels.

Yet we easily forget that the RNLI relies entirely on public donations, which is a humbling thought given the number of lives saved and the risks taken by the lifeboat crews to rescue those in danger.
