Welcome to the Podiatry Council of NSW E-Newsletter for Summer 2015/16.
The report of the independent three-year review of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme was released on 7 August, along with a Communique from Health Ministers responding to its recommendations. It is therefore timely that in this edition, we touch on some of the areas for which podiatrists, as registered health practitioners in the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme, are accountable.
Mr Luke Taylor
President, Podiatry Council of New South Wales
Infection prevention
In this article we bring together some useful resources to assist practitioners to fulfill their infection prevention responsibilities. The recent problems at four Sydney dental practices act as a timely reminder of the consequences of not complying with infection prevention standards in clinical practice.
Employers to be informed about changes in their employees’ registration status
With effect from 1 November 2015, health professional Councils, including the Podiatry Council, have a statutory responsibility to notify employers when it imposes, varies or lifts conditions on the registration of their employees. As a matter of policy, the Council has also decided to advise employers whenever another adjudication body suspends or cancels the registration of one of their employees, or when it imposes, varies or lifts conditions of registration.
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) has a program of auditing health practitioners’ compliance with registration standards. The purpose of the audits is to ensure that practitioners are meeting the National Board’s standards for registration (continuing professional development, personal indemnity insurance, recency of practice and criminal history checks).
Health practitioners, employers and education providers have a statutory obligation under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law to report notifiable conduct to AHPRA.
