South Island health system closes information gaps

Hospitals across the South Island are now sharing relevant patient health information electronically for the entire South Island population.  

On 13 February, when Nelson Marlborough district health board (DHB) launched the clinical information portal, Health Connect South, it joined Canterbury, West Coast, South Canterbury and Southern DHBs – connecting all five South Island DHBs to the same shared electronic patient record for hospital care.

Guest editorial: Dr Kate Grundy on palliative care

All of our patients will ultimately die, as will we ourselves, this is not negotiable. How we die, however, is dependent on many factors and it is important that we all do our bit to make the process as comfortable and dignified as possible.

Conversations that Count Day


With Conversations that Count Day 2017 fast approaching, now is the time to start thinking about how to encourage people to talk about and plan for their future and end-of-life care.

The annual event, created to raise awareness about advance care planning, will be held slightly earlier this year, on 5 April. The theme for 2017 will once again be ‘Get them Talking’.

Improving healthcare with Safety1st data

Over almost two years (from 1 January 2015 to 30 November 2016), 58,157 forms were entered into Safety1st, the South Island DHBs incident risk management system. These forms provide valuable information that can be used to inform and support local improvements.

Healthy lifestyle information for Pacific communities

Samoan and Tongan communities will be able to access healthy lifestyle information in their own language, with the recently translated BeSmarter tool.

Currently used by health professionals across the country to guide families to make healthy lifestyle choices, the information sheet was translated to ensure equitable access for Pacific communities.

A discussion on positive parenting and child health

Professor Barry Taylor, Chair of the South Island Clinical Advisory Group for childhood healthy weight, and the founder of positive parenting program Triple P, Dr Matt Sanders, talked to Radio NZ's Kathryn Ryan about what help is out there for families and children who want to achieve a healthy weight.

Video: An interview with the Calderdale Framework founders
Late last year, the South Island Alliance hosted a visit from the UK founders of the Calderdale Framework, Jayne Duffy and Rachael Smith (see related story). While they were here, Anne Buckley, Allied Health Facilitator and Project Manager, South Island Workforce Development Hub, asked them the top five burning questions from facilitators across the South Island.
