Staying Positive

With all of the changes in the country these days it can be hard to stay positive. The new administration, the protests, the news, and all of the anger can wear a person down both mentally and physically. At these times it's important to stay positive and keep moving forward. Here are a few tips I like to use during rough times:

- Move. Exercise can be a great stress reliever if you let it. Remember that not every workout has to be high intensity, sometimes just getting out of the city for a hike or spending a day on the slopes can help open up some space.
- Talk it out with close friends or loved ones. Discuss what might be upsetting you and work on strategies to overcome the feelings.
- Educate yourself. There is a lot of fake news, attention grabbing headlines, and misinformation being spread around. Take some time to dig into the sources and really understand the situation instead of having a knee jerk reaction.
- Meditate. Spend some time each day to sit, stand, or lie down with your thoughts and no other distractions. Not sure how to meditate? Try out the Calm or Headspace apps for a guided meditation.
- Help others. Humans have an natural desire to help others. Not only is it good for the world but it will help give you a sense or purpose and can also have a domino effect.
- Be there. There's a good chance that if you are having some trouble than someone else is too. Reach out to someone you know who may be having a tough time and let them know you're thinking about them. Who knows, you may be able to help each other out in the end.

You've spoken and we listened. We are changing the location of our Thursday Athletic Movement classes from Aquatic Park Pier to the Palace of Fine Arts. Class will meet at the intersection of Lyon and Bay streets.

No Class on Presidents Day

Both Whitney and Alex will be taking a 3 day weekend for the upcoming holiday which means no class on Monday, 2/20.

We will be back to the normal schedule starting Tuesday 2/21.
Audio Bootcamp and Running Classes

Alex has been working with MoveWith on uploading new audio bootcamp and running workouts. These are a great way to take your workouts mobile when you're traveling or on days that we don't have classes.

The Push-up

Seems simple enough right? Lay down, push your body up. While this is the basic way to do it, there are ways to get more benefits out of this exercise.

First, start with your hands directly underneath your shoulder in a high plank position.

Slowly lower yourself down to the ground keeping your body stiff (glutes engaged and stomach tight). As you lower, bring your elbows back against your ribs or at a 45 degree angle. Don't let your elbows go out to the side or else it'll put a lot of pressure on your shoulder joint.

Bring your chest all the way to the ground then press back up keeping your elbows at the same angle.

If you're not able to get all the way down, drop your knees to the floor or bring your hands up to an elevated surface.

Resolve to ramble like a Rattlesnake in 2017! The Rattlesnake Ramble 5K/10K/Half goes down on Sun, 2/26 @ China Camp State Park in San Rafael.
