Assistant Director of Bands (Assistant Professor, tenure-track)

An earned doctorate (or ABD with a completion date of August 15, 2021) in a band-related field is required. Of primary importance, candidates will demonstrate both commitment to and evidence of ability to build a first-rate athletic band program that resembles (e.g., size, scope, sound, schedule) of a top athletic band program in the Power Five conferences. The successful candidate will offer significant experience and proven excellence in athletic band leadership.

The Assistant Director of Bands will assist the Director of Bands in a team environment with the administration, recruitment, and continued development of a comprehensive university band program. In addition, the successful candidate will have the ability to enhance the school’s commitment to diversity and inclusion reflecting departmental and institutional values.
Specified duties include: providing outstanding organizational and musical direction of the 250-member Colorado State University Marching Band (with oversight by the Director of Bands); logistical planning including managing staff assigned to work with the university athletic bands and oversight of an administrative assistant; organizational and musical direction of the men’s and women’s basketball band; coordinating the Presidential Pep Band; maintaining budgetary discipline (with oversight by the Director of Bands); communication in a timely manner with university offices and the alumni association (in coordination with the Director of Bands); engaging in scholarly and/or creative research activities appropriate to the discipline; participating in faculty service activities and committee work; teaching additional classes as determined by qualifications and institutional needs.
Examples of additional classes may include Symphonic Band (the second auditioned concert band) or Concert Band (the third concert band), marching band techniques, undergraduate conducting, etc.

References will be contacted at the semifinalist interview stage and will not be contacted without prior notification of candidates. Provide evidence in your CV and in your cover letter of ability to build a first-rate athletic band program that resembles (e.g., size, scope, sound, schedule) of a top athletic band program in the Power Five conferences. All materials must be submitted digitally. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Screening will begin on January 19, 2021.
Those candidates who are invited to the second round will be asked to submit halftime drill of their own design with a video of the performance and a 10-minute video of a marching rehearsal under their direction. In addition, semi-finalist candidates will submit an example of their teaching and research in their area of expertise. These may include either a 10-minute video of a concert band rehearsal under their direction and a 10-minute video of a concert band performances under their direction or a 10-minute video of their classroom teaching and an example of their research.

The School of Music, Theatre and Dance (SMTD) has 41 tenured and tenure-track faculty as well as 53 adjunct faculty.
