Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice in Music Teaching and Learning (Non-Tenure-Track)
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a doctoral degree that includes extensive work in music teaching and learning. At least 3 years of successful experience teaching at the elementary and/or secondary level is required. Experience in music making as a performer in traditional and popular music venues and as a composer and/or improviser are expected. Preferred Qualifications: College-level teaching experience is desirable.
Position Expectations:
The Thornton School provides degrees in Music Teaching and Learning at the graduate level and includes three distinct though integrated Master of Music degrees and the Doctor of Musical Arts. Primary responsibilities for this position include the leadership of a newly-created, intensive 12-month Master's Degree program called Contemporary Teaching Practice which leads to state certification in California and other states. In addition, teaching responsibilities in this new degree will include courses devoted to contemporary teaching techniques for both traditional and popular music settings at the elementary and secondary levels, music teaching and learning for youth, technology, improvisation and composition in the schools, as well as student and teaching assessment. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the curriculum of other master's degrees and to the doctoral program within the Department. Masters and doctoral document advising is expected.
