Minimum Position Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with significant professional experience required. ABD or doctorate preferred.
  • Documented teaching experience at the college level with a proven record of student success preferred.
  • Documented and sustained levels of national or international professional performance experience. We are especially interested in candidates who are accomplished in performing across diverse musical styles and performance traditions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to pedagogy and recruitment
  • A strong interest in and experience with community engagement, music entrepreneurship, music leadership, and/or other nontraditional career models is desirable.
  • The accomplishments of candidates for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population, and their ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and collective mission, vision, and operating standards of the School of Music.
Position Expectations:
The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis seeks an experienced Assistant Professor of Horn for a tenure-track faculty appointment. The School of Music’s Brass Area is a highly collaborative, multidimensional area of the Performance Studies Division offering the Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, Artist Diploma and Doctor of Musical Arts degree programs.

  • Teach applied horn at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Teach weekly studio classes
  • Promote a studio culture that supports educational diversity, and serve as a mentor for horn students
  • Rehearse, perform and tour with faculty ensembles (Memphis Brass Quintet and Woodwind Quintet)
  • Recruiting and maintaining a studio that meets the needs of the School of Music
  • Additional duties will include advising doctoral documents and projects, lecture-recitals, and chamber music coachings.
  • A commitment to recruiting, mentoring, and teaching students from diverse musical backgrounds, especially first-generation college students
  • Other duties may include course assignments commensurate with candidates qualifications or School of Music needs.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the discipline through engagement in significant professional activities including maintaining regional, national and international visibility in performance, external masterclasses, conference presentations, publications, and services to the school/college/university/community.
