The University of Memphis, Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music
Assistant Professor of Music Therapy
Minimum Position Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in music therapy required
  • board certification in music therapy (MT-BC)
  • minimum 3-5 years of documented clinical work experience as a practicing music therapist
  • experience teaching, mentoring, and/or supervising undergraduate music therapy students
  • The accomplishments of candidates for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population, and their ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and collective mission, vision and operating standards of the School of Music
Preferred Qualifications:
  • earned doctorate in music therapy or related field
  • minimum two years of documented collegiate teaching experience in music therapy or a related field
  • demonstrated record of scholarly/creative achievement, including publications, presentations, and/or creative outputs
  • experience in music therapy program development, including student recruitment, with evidence of sustained program growth
  • undergraduate curriculum development experience
  • experience establishing relationships with clinical partners, placing interns for fieldwork, and supervising clinical practicum residencies
Position Expectations:
The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis seeks an experienced and nationally-prominent music therapist to oversee the establishment of new courses and programs in music therapy for a tenure-track faculty appointment, to begin August 2022.

  • establish and lead the University of Memphis’s undergraduate music therapy program, creating and refining curricula in collaboration with School of Music faculty and in accordance with AMTA and NASM standards
  • develop and teach new music therapy courses at the undergraduate level (e.g., music therapy foundations, clinical applications, and other topic areas as needed)
  • work collaboratively with community-based organizations to establish clinical practicum placements
  • supervise clinical practicum students
  • actively participate in the recruitment of prospective music therapy students -mentor all music therapy students including those of diverse backgrounds, especially first-generation college students
  • engage in School of Music, College, University, and professional service
  • conduct program assessment as required by the university and/or accrediting bodies
  • the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the discipline through the pursuit of scholarly research/creative activity including regional, national and international visibility in publications, performance, presentations, conference participation, and service to the school/college/university/community
