Executive Director
Position Expectations:
The CMS Executive Director will provide strong administrative, management, and fiscal guidance for the organization and staff and volunteers, assuring a positive workplace culture and a service orientation toward the membership. In collaboration with the President of The College Music Society, the Executive Director will:
  • serve as Chief Operating Officer;
  • plan, organize, staff, direct, and monitor the daily operations of the Executive Office;
  • assist and support the Board of Directors, Officers, Executive Committee, and Finance Committee;
  • administer elections and assist with appointments of officers;
  • administer fiscal activities and records maintenance;
  • oversee corporate status and documents, and annual meeting of the membership;
  • supervise staff;
  • monitor and maintain facilities, equipment, and technological infrastructure;
  • supervise membership records maintenance;
  • develop and manage professional activities, information services, career development and engagement initiatives;
  • develop and manage effective dissemination of information concerning the organization via traditional and emerging print, electronic, and social media;
  • develop and oversee management of books and monographs series;
  • develop and manage the College Music Symposium;
  • establish and maintain effective liaisons with education, business, and governmental organizations in music and higher education.

As North America's leading professional organization for college and university music faculty, The College Music Society (CMS) invites applications for the position of Executive Director. CMS seeks an experienced, visionary leader who embraces the mission of CMS and understands its culture. In collaboration with officers and the elected board, the Executive Director will help to define a distinctive role for the Society among other professional organizations within and across music disciplines and be able to innovate within, guide, and articulate CMS's vision. The Executive Director must have a proactive administrative style, possess business acumen, and be entrepreneurial, while also promoting professional integrity within the organization. In order to be successful, this leader must be a clear communicator, an excellent listener, and able to effectively manage, energize, and examine the roles of the professional staff and a large number of volunteers so that they are effective in their efforts on behalf of the organization. Leadership experience in the arts or academia, administrative experience, and knowledge of issues in music in higher education are essential. A successful candidate will be able to leverage the geographical location of the Executive Office and assess the Society's organizational structure.
