Dear woodturning friend,

Over the past few years, photography & film-making has become a passion almost equal to my love of woodturning. I enjoy using this medium to pass on some of the knowledge gained over my twenty-six years at the lathe, by making instructional DVDs and short movies about woodturning.

My aim is to produce the best quality instructional and inspirational videos. To help do this I receive ongoing tuition in all aspects of  lm-making. Along with learning about the medium, there has been an investment in  lm-making equipment to ensure that the viewing quality, picture and sound, are excellent. You can enjoy the story and the instruction with beautifully shot and well-edited footage.

I invite you to watch my short films such as ‘Early Morning Project’, ‘Top Performance’ and ‘Turning a Thin Wall’ which can be easily found and viewed on YouTube or on my website. I look forward to making many more.

Your continued and valued support in buying my DVDs allows me to work on other short inspirational  Films which expose many to this wonderful craft.

Also in the public domain is a TV series, made by the Irish television station RTE, called Makers (2015). Glenn features in this series over 5 short episodes made originally for young audiences, and takes the viewers through the making of bowls, plates and spinning tops. Such exposure to the craft and enterprise of woodturning raises the appreciation of woodturning generally.

Dublin Viking Bowl by
Glenn Lucas (no. 5 in series)

Released in Dec 2015

This project is based on an eleventh century bowl, recently uncovered on a Viking settlement in Dublin and now in the collection of The National Museum of Ireland. Its elegant shape is the inspiration for Glenn’s latest project. Clear instruction will help you make this otherwise challenging piece and the skills you will use can be applied to turning any bowl. Its classic form and functionality are timeless. Also included with this DVD is a short film Early Morning Project.

A tip for April!
No more oil spills on the lathe

Have you ever knocked a can of finishing oil onto the lathe? You have finished your piece and you balance a container of oil on the lathe bed beside your piece that is still attached…when… splash! The container of oil spills leaving a mess on the machine and means you have to spend more time cleaning up in the workshop.

Use a metal container such as a sweets/candy tin, and simply place a magnet in the bottom of the can, attaching can to lathe for the finishing job.
