Dear friends and well-wishers of NIRMAN,

As we are all getting ready to celebrate our holidays with friends and family, I want to share with you a thought about our privilege. We have education, stability, skills—and we did not necessarily labour at providing them institutionally to ourselves, much as we labored personally. Might it be possible to share a bit of our privileges with others and make them able to also have education, stability and skills, those who labour away and are not supported institutionally?

You have all either come to NIRMAN or heard of us in some way--as artists, interns, students, conference participants, or friends. Thank you! You will be happy to know that we are working with fresh energy all the time to apply our research on education, children, families and the arts to actual children and families in India. We work hard every day to create institutional knowledge and resources, on our two campuses, in the city and the village.

The school has, over 25 years, been performing the extraordinary feat of integration of all kinds of students, from the richest to the poorest, learning together under the rubric of a “no-excuses-for-less-than-excellent-education” policy. This excellence is measured not by grades but a by a constantly-researched arts-centred, ecologically-sensitive curriculum. Our ‘success’ lies in providing children like Ankita and Faiz the resources to become lovers of learning, in the development of the arts for children, in the training of teachers in theatre, dance and reading, and in environmental and gender-sensitization work.

At this time of celebrations and new beginnings, we invite you to continue your association with NIRMAN in one of three ways.
The first way you could participate is by donating money, or seeking out other donors. Make a tax-free donation through our US-based grant-giving organisation, APPEAR-India, a registered 501(c)3 non-profit.

You could earmark your donation for a specific purpose, such as a village or artisan child’s schooling or meals; curriculum development; teachers’ training; our libraries; our art camps; and our village campus. Please contact me for more details about any of these. Or you could simply make a donation for us to use as we most need and we would be happy to tell you its application and results.

Two, you could visit us and do your own project and share any part of your skill or knowledge with us while getting to know all kinds of people in Banaras and surrounding villages: our children, teachers, researchers, families, artists and artisans in the city. You could send interns or artists to work with us. You could send students to our unique Study Abroad Programme at our Research Centre. If you are interested, please join more formally, as part of the Board or one of our committees. Simply write to us and we will follow up.
Finally, we will spend the next five years building up a beautiful riverside campus in Chitauni, some eight miles south of Banaras. This will be done with loving attention to detail and nuance, centering on ecological and artistic literacy. Maybe you are, or know of, an architect, engineer, artist, writer, scholar, farmer, gardener, or simply ecologically minded person who would like to join us for any duration over the next five years.

I know that you will enjoy working with us! So, whichever thing(s) you choose: donating or raising money, visiting, sending interns, recommending us to students, or helping to build up our new campus—please do take some action as 2015 rolls over and 2016 begins. Your donation is tax-deductible but there is no value to be placed on any kind of contribution you may choose to make for India’s imperiled children and youth.
Please send my call on to anyone who believes in philanthropy, is looking for a good cause, or has interest in the arts, education and environment in India.
