Hilde Vautmans (Member European Parliament) launches ambitious ELFM EU Action Plan
On February 7, 2017 the KU Leuven coordinated EU MSCA-ETN NEW-MINE project kicked off in Houthalen, Belgium. The kick-off was organised in conjunction with the 5th General Assembly of the European Enhanced Landfill Mining Consortium (EURELCO). The event was attended by 80 participants from 13 EU Member States. Guest speaker was Belgian Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Hilde Vautmans who launched her ambitious ELFM EU Action Plan. This consists of a new EU Parliamentary Working Group on Landfill Mining, a second ELFM Seminar in the European Parliament, and the ambition to set up “ELACON” (European Landfill Mining Competency Network), which is to be a multi-level stakeholder platform with the support of the European Commission (based on the successful ERECON concept). The General Assembly also included a unique event in which the NEW-MINE researchers went in dialogue with the “locals” living in the vicinity of the Remo landfill site in Houthalen.

OPEN ACCESS
SIM² KU Leuven's guide to Open Access
Since the launch of Horizon 2020 the EC has been highlighting the importance of Open Access publishing. Open Access publishing implies that all peer-reviewed scientific publications resulting from a Horizon 2020 project should be deposited in open-access repositories. SIM² KU Leuven developed a step-by-step Open Access flow diagram that can be used by all partners who are involved in Horizon 2020 projects.

NEW PROJECTS
New Flemish Policy Research Centre on Circular Economy
The Flemish Government recently approved the setup of a new Policy Research Centre “Sustainable Materials Management in a Circular Economy (CE)”. The centre will perform policy research in order to monitor the progress of the Flemish region to a Circular Economy, to frame Flanders’ CE actions in international policy and to study the effects on economy and environment of different policy measures to stimulate CE. The centre is a collaboration between KU Leuven, UGent, UA and VITO, and is led by prof. Karel Van Acker (SIM² KU Leuven).
