Campine and KU Leuven win strategic R&D project on antimony trioxide production ("ANTARES")
On March 9, 2017, the Flemish Government (VLAIO) officially approved the R&D project ANTARES, a strategic cooperation between Campine, one of the leading antimony trioxide producers in Europe, and SIM² KU Leuven, UCL, InsPyro and Praxair. ANTARES, which stands for the “Design of a novel, flexible and rapid process for the transformation of distinct primary and anthropogenic antimony-rich resources into high-purity antimony-tri-oxide (ATO)” is a 2.5 year project with a total budget of 1.83 million euro. The Flemish Government provides a research subsidy of 0.92 million euro. ANTARES needs to tackle the antimony supply risk that endangers the Flemish and European antimony trioxide producers.

SIM² KU LEUVEN
Solvometallurgy, an emerging branch in extractive metallurgy
Over the last years SIM² KU Leuven has been spending considerable attention on co-developing the field of “solvometallurgy”, an emerging branch in extraction metallurgy. Prof. Koen Binnemans and Dr. Peter Tom Jones have now authored a milestone position paper in the Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy to present the opportunities and challenges for solvometallurgy. An exciting journey lies ahead!

NEW PUBLICATIONS
Rare-earth thematic section in Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy
The Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy has just published its thematic section on “Green Rare Earth Elements—Innovations in Ore Processing, Hydrometallurgy, and Electrolysis”, assembled by Prof. Bernd Friedrich (RWTH Aachen). SIM² KU Leuven contributed through two papers:
Separation of Rare Earths by Solvent Extraction with an Undiluted Nitrate Ionic Liquid (K. Larsson, K. Binnemans)
REE Recovery from End-of-Life NdFeB Permanent Magnet Scrap: A Critical Review (Y. Yang, A. Walton, R. Sheridan, T. Van Gerven, P.T. Jones, K. Binnemans)

European Parliament votes YES! to include ELFM in Landfill Directive
On March 14, 2017, the European Parliament voted about its position with respect to EU Waste Policy. The approved “Waste Package” concerns four Directives, incl. the Landfill Directive. For the first time ever, this Landfill Directive is now set to include a specific reference to “Enhanced Landfill Mining”. This breakthrough is the result of the concerted efforts of the European Enhanced Landfill Mining Consortium (EURELCO) and the Belgian MEPs Hilde Vautmans & Mark Demesmaeker. Read full story here.

NEW PROJECTS
EU Horizon 2020 MSCA-ETN COSMIC kicked off
COSMIC is “the European Training Network for Continuous Sonication and Microwave Reactors”. It is one of the 6 Marie-Sklodowska-Curie ETNs currently coordinated by the SIM² KU Leuven cluster. COSMIC is a key instrument for supporting and training the chemical process industry – and in particular the fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries – in their transition from batch to continuous production.

OUTREACH
Video on landfill mining researchers meeting landfill site locals
Preceding the formal kick-off meeting of the EU Horizon 2020 MSCA-ETN NEW-MINE project on Enhanced Landfill Mining, a unique event “New-miners meet locals” was organised on February 6, 2017 in Houthalen, Belgium. The event took place to initiate a fruitful dialogue between NEW-MINE PhD students & Supervisors from diverse EU universities and companies and the so-called ‘DE Locals’ group of the Remo landfill site in Houthalen. As the "social license to operate" is key for these type of mining projects, real interaction during all project phases is of significant importance. Watch video here.
DISSEMINATION
Involve SIM² KU Leuven as your EU project dissemination partner?
Since recently the European Commission is demanding that multi-partner EU Horizon 2020 and EIT RawMaterials projects need to pay professional attention with respect to tailored dissemination and communication towards a diversity of target audiences. In order to assist EU project coordinators, SIM² KU Leuven has developed a number of “dissemination and outreach” services. In need of a dissemination partner in your project?
