SIM² KU Leuven Newsletter #2
[25 MARCH 2016]
Dear colleague,
This is the second SIM² KU Leuven Newsletter, the first one AFTER the despicable attacks in Brussels, our neighbour city. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, some of whom we know. Considering our mission to contribute to a better world, we will keep up the research work at SIM² KU Leuven. Here below we bring you some key news, which will contribute to this mission and, now more than ever, we invite you to cooperate with us. (Peter Tom Jones, Chairman SIM² KU Leuven)

Prof. Koen Binnemans wins Advanced ERC Grant SOLCRIMET
On the 16th of March 2016 the European Research Council (ERC) formally approved the Advanced Grant proposal of Prof. Koen Binnemans (SIM² KU Leuven & RARE³ KU Leuven). SOLCRIMET’s aim is to successfully apply a ground-breaking metallurgical approach – solvometallurgy – to the extraction of specific critical metals, i.e. rare earths, tantalum, niobium, cobalt, indium, gallium, germanium and antimony, which are key enablers of the required transition to a low-carbon, circular economy. The approach involves the discovery of non-aqueous solvent pairs that are immiscible and allow the extraction of metal complexes at moderate temperatures, leading to high-purity recycled metals. The possibility to recycle critical metals with energy-efficient, low-cost processes will have a significant impact on the global recycling rates of these metals. More information about the critical metal recovery research within SIM² KU Leuven can be found here.

About SIM² KU Leuven
SIM² KU Leuven (Sustainable Inorganic Materials Management) is the interdisciplinary research cluster at KU Leuven, which develops zero-waste, eco-friendly flow sheets for the valorisation of (1) End-of-Life (critical) metal containing products, (2) mining waste and industrial residues, and (3) landfilled streams.

Royal Flemish Academy
Prof. Koen Binnemans has been elected as a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB). The KVAB is the Academy of Flanders, a learned society founded in 1772.

De Morgen
Prof. Koen Binnemans in an interview with the Flemish quality newspaper De Morgen, 29 January 2016, on the issue of thorium reactors in the popular Norwegian television series Occupied. Download the pdf of the interview here.

Special Issue on ELFM
Following the successful Third Enhanced Landfill Mining Symposium in Lisbon (February 2016) it has been decided that there will be a Special Issue on Enhanced Landfill Mining in the Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy. Papers should cover ELFM of mono-landfills containing mining waste and industrial residues.

EU H2020 METGROW+ (group photo)
METGROW+ is one of the two winning H2020 projects answering the call “new metallurgical systems” (SC5-11E). Within this project, primary and secondary materials are studied as critical metal resources. The project is coordinated by VTT (Finland) and involves the Flemish partners KU Leuven, UGent, VITO, Group Machiels, Arche and Umicore.

DEMETER is the EU Training Network for the Design and Recycling of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnet Motors and Generators in Hybrid and Full Electric Vehicles, coordinated by KU Leuven. More details here.
ELFM short film
Digging for garbage is a short film, with former MTV star Ray Cokes, intended for a wide audience to raise awareness with respect to the benefits of Enhanced Landfill Mining. For the first time ever a brass band enters the bowels of a semi-excavated landfill, providing incredible and unforgettable scenes. Watch video here.

On 17 and 18 May 2016 the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling will have its plenary spring meeting in the historical Begijnhof of Leuven. The Center currently organizes 10 research projects with the 3 academic partners WPI, CSM and KU Leuven in close cooperation with its industrial members. During the meeting the strategy of the Center is defined, the status and direction of the different projects are discussed. In addition, the cooperation between the Center and EIT RawMaterials will be highlighted during a networking event. If you have interest to participate in this meeting or learn more about the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling, you can contact Prof. Bart Blanpain, site director for KU Leuven, or Brajendra Mishra, Center Director.
