Dear colleague,
Welcome to this first Newsletter of SIM² KU Leuven, the interdisciplinary Research Cluster at KU Leuven dealing with innovation in urban and landfill mining. This monthly Newsletter will inform you about breakthrough research results, publications, projects, events  etc. The Newsletter will also explore synergies with other initiatives on the Flemish, European and global level. We hope it leads to novel co-operations and we are always open for suggestions. (Peter Tom Jones, Chairman SIM² KU Leuven)

In 2013 the European Rare Earths Competency Network (ERECON) was set up by the European Commission at the request of the European Parliament. Its long awaited, final report was released in June 2015. In the framework of the KU Leuven coordinated EU FP7 MC-ITN EREAN project, a milestone Policy Brief, providing a summary of ERECON’s recycling chapter, has just been published.  New research policy recommendations are provided.

SIM² KU Leuven (Sustainable Inorganic Materials Management) is the interdisciplinary research cluster at KU Leuven, which develops zero-waste, eco-friendly flow sheets for the valorisation of (1) End-of-Life (critical) metal containing products, (2) mining waste and industrial residues, and (3) landfilled streams.

Following the successful Third Enhanced Landfill Mining Symposium in Lisbon (February 2016) it has been decided that there will be a Special Issue on Enhanced Landfill Mining in the Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy. Papers should cover ELFM of mono-landfills containing mining waste and industrial residues.

This SPIRE project, which started in October 2015, contributes to Europe’s rare earth recovery and magnesium recycling technologies, improving the efficiencies of these processes and advancing the TRLs for a new generation of industrial processes. The project is led by CIDAUT with KU Leuven the only university partner. More details here

This Flemish Environmental & Energy Technology Innovation Platform project targets the "MIning and VAlorisation of critical Metals from former Industrial Landfills" (MIVAMIL). The project is a collaboration between Campine, Witteveen & Bos, Tauw België, Recmix Belgium, Jacobs Beton and KU Leuven.
In October 2015 the European Parliament organised its first ever Seminar on Enhanced Landfill Mining (together with EURELCO). A  summary booklet has been launched, with testimonials from the EC, the EP and other key stakeholders. Conclusions? Europe needs improved inventories for its 500,000+ landfills; a vision for Europe’s landfills needs to be developed along with a set of innovative technolo­gies that can upcycle the ex­cavated waste into valuable products.
