Edition 1

We are excited to bring you the first edition of our student newsletter, ‘The Byte’ – a Faculty of IT and WIRED collaboration. Every fortnight during semester, we'll share something of interest from the world of IT, let you know about the opportunities for fun, career and personal development, and give you a glimpse into the lives of ‘Humans of IT’. In our first edition, we are delighted to hear from Sophie & Hugo, our WIRED IT Club leaders.

Employers tell us that they want graduates who like to get involved, so check out our ‘Just Do It’ events calendar, full of things to to get you engaged. Don't forget to look at the ‘My Career’ section for a chance to share your skills and smarts, and if you have a burning question just ‘Ask Terence’. Finally, go down to the 'Feedback' section to leave us your comments and suggestions. Three coffee vouchers to be won for great ideas.

Humans of IT

Sophie - Vice-President and Diversity Officer at WIRED, InfoTech Student:
Sitting in the front row of the lecture theatre, four years at Monash and in a first year introductory lecture. It’s been a long journey from where I started in a different Faculty, but all the opportunities I've had until now have definitely been worth it. I would have never imagined in first year, that I would be Vice President of WIRED and designing capes for our Super Mentors. I can definitely say that now that I am in the Faculty of IT, I feel like I am home.

Hugo - President of WIRED, Chair of UNIHACK 2016, CompSci Student:
I was in my first year at Monash. Things were scary, and things were changing. I attended UNIHACK in 2014, competing against teams of second, third, and fourth years. It put a lot of pressure on me to work hard and do my best, which was a good thing. I didn't win, but I had an amazing time and made lots of friends. It didn't stop there, I was encouraged to become more involved, and two years later, I'm the President of WIRED Monash! Getting involved was just a matter of contacting the club. It's never too late to take the plunge and see what university is all about, make new friends, join clubs, find new hobbies, and most of all to have fun! Definitely don't hold back!

Ask Terence

Q. Terence please help. I'm always getting lost on campus?
A.  I often find I am a bit lost myself, but not on campus. Download the Monash app or the Lost On Campus app on your iPhone or Android phone, or just look up Google maps - it has all the Clayton campus streets. You'll never get lost on campus again !!
